Weather

Melbourne

Absolutely perfect winter conditions in Melbourne this Sunday for football. No rain, no wind and a bit chilly. That means we can all pick our fantasy teams for this contest without fear of weather impacting the game at all. Let’s play some fantasy!!

Where to Attack?

Let's take a closer look at our AFL Data Tools to find any trends that might help us construct winning lineups on Draftstars for this match.

Despite being a very successful team this season, Collingwood have been giving up a massive amount of fantasy points through the midfield. This is part of the new game style they adopted this season where they play a fast paced and very direct style while also not being a very strong side on the inside. As a result the Magpies have given up the most points in the league to midfielders, which will suit the Blues who have racked up the most disposals in the league.

With Brody Grundy missing the majority of the season Collingwood have leaked points to rucks, conceding 85 points per game to their opponent’s number one ruck (and 97 per game over the last five weeks). This is the fourth most in the league this season, and makes for an interesting selection dilemma as the Blues are not the strongest team in the ruck and will be rolling out Marc Pittonet as their sole ruckman this week.

Game Script – Carlton midfielders, Collingwood forwards

Value Play

Finlay Macrae ($6,000) comes in for what will be his first full game of the season. His only other time he got on the field was back in round 9 against the Bulldogs where he played just 27% game time and logged 18 fantasy points. Last season Macrae showed that he is capable of returning value at this price point lodging 54, 71, 59 and 71 from his last four games in 2021. The Magpies have been crying out for players to run through the middle as well, which is Macrae’s natural position. Last week they had Sidebottom and Josh Daicos splitting time on the inside and while DeGoey returning will soak up some of that, Macrae should get opportunity.

Caleb Marchbank ($6,000) will be playing his third game for the year and had his best result last week posting 51 fantasy points. Marchbank didn’t play any senior games in 2020 or 2021, but his three seasons prior he averaged 56 in 2019, 54 in 2018 and 69 in 2017. These are all solid returns for the minimum price on a single game slate and there is potential to link him up with other Carlton defenders. The Blues should control the possession in this matchup win or lose, so I love including Marchbank in Carlton stacks.

Mid-Priced Plays

Will Setterfield ($9,850) has seen a late season resurgence as the benefactor of injuries through the Blues midfield. Since returning four games ago he has averaged 87 fantasy points and last week got opportunity on the inside, which was the role he was originally drafted for, attending 78% of the Blues centre bounces according to our CBA Data Tool. While Adam Cerra has returned this week, he will likely take up the time Sam Docherty spent in the middle and Setterfield should continue to get this opportunity.

Premium Plays

Patrick Cripps ($14,750) started the season in form that had him favourite for the Brownlow before slowing during the middle part of the year. Recently he has returned to that league best form posting fantasy scores of 121, 139, 92 and 118 from his last four games. As noted above this matchup is the best in the league with the Magpies giving up 87 points per game to midfielders, over 7 points per game above league average.

Darcy Cameron ($13,520) has been a revelation this season assuming a significant ruck role with Brody Grundy out with injury. He has been splitting the duties with Mason Cox and as noted above the Magpies have been giving up significant fantasy points this season to opposition rucks, so I think you can consider a dual ruck play with Cameron available at forward as well.
