Geelong vs Essendon at MCG (GEE -6.5, Total 161.5)

GWS vs Sydney at ACCOR Stadium (SYD -1.5, Total 153.5)

Brisbane vs Port Adelaide at the GABBA (BRI -14.5, 168.5)

Weather

Melbourne

Sydney

Brisbane

The weather in Sydney stands out on this slate with up to 15mm of rain expected to hit through the afternoon. That means it is time to focus on the rucks and inside contested players in the GWS vs Sydney matchup.

Conditions look fine in Melbourne and Brisbane, but with the heat and night time humidity in Queensland I’d expect slippery conditions in the Lions vs Power contest.

Where to Attack?

Obviously each season is a new year and trends from 2021 aren’t typically going to remain the same, that said with just the one game under the belt so far it is still a great starting point to gauge what we can expect heading into this day of games.

All the teams on this Saturday slate were generally stingy in 2021 when it came to conceding fantasy points. The one major area that stands out to attack if via the ruck against the Giants. This year should be no different as GWS are starting Matt Flynn as the number one ruck this week. The weather conditions will also suit rucks in this game making Tom Hickey an obvious option to roster.

Game Script – Geelong backs, Sydney rucks

VALUE PLAYS

Max Holmes (DS $7,290) looks to have taken the wing role for the Cats this preseason, particularly with Mitch Duncan and Sam Menegola still out with injury. He has also been given the opportunity to attend centre bounces and as a result makes a perfect value option early in the season. Geelong led the league in uncontested possessions and marks last year and that game style will help Holmes fantasy scoring in this role.

Archie Perkins (DS $6,650) had a ripping preseason and will be given further opportunity this year to push further up the ground. In the AAMI Community Preseason Series he jagged 2 goals from 17 possessions and posted 81 fantasy points.

MID-PRICED PLAYS

James Rowbottom (DS $9,700) looks under-priced on this slate after a slow finish to last season while still averaging 75 points per game. He will have every opportunity in the Swans midfield this season and should be well suited for a contested game in the wet.

Zak Butters (DS $12,070) will be a popular play on this slate as it has been made clear through the preseason that he will be a regular feature in the midfield this year. During the preseason he was a regular at both centre bounces and on the wing, in the AAMI Community Preseason Series against the Crows he posted 107 fantasy points and 32 possessions, and was absolutely everywhere.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Josh Kelly (DS $15,360) is another player who is moving back to their best role by going into the midfield. Last season he appeared to be played anywhere but on the inside, however this year he looks to be back in the centre and at his best through the preseason. We have seen in the past he can post big averages, when from 2017 to 2019 he posted 108 to 116 per game each season. He stands out in the wet and despite being elite on the outside, loves the contested game, which will suit this matchup.
