TPC Sawgrass

The unofficial 5th major, the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, is the next stop on the PGA tour where the par-72 7,189 yard layout is a true test of golf for all tournament players. Highly regarded by all tour professionals as a title to win, the Sawgrass layout in Florida could be a beast of a course with the forecast for high winds forecasted for the event. What makes the course well renowned is the iconic 17th hole that features an island green. With packed galleries surrounding the hole, any slight miscue off the tee means a wet ball and the jeers from a packed gallery.

The world’s top 50 golfers are in the event and picking a winner, let alone golfers to make the cut, is going to be a difficult task. With so many water hazards (a total of 14 holes with water) there aren’t many bailout areas and especially with this forecasted wind, scrambling for par might be the key this weekend. This week we need to focus on Strokes gained on approach and bogey avoidance as a lot of water equals a lot of penalty strokes.

DraftKings have gone huge this week, posting a multiple of high pooled contests headlined with the $1 million 5th Major Classic (A whopping $250,000 to 1st place) for a $10 buy-in. Also available is the $200,000 Birdie contest for a $3 entry.

Moneyball continue their boutique contests with a $500 contest for a $10 buy-in. Last week the contest nearly got to $1,000 in prize money. I hope the good folks at MB can increase the pool with the Masters coming up. Plus PlayOn continue to offer DFS golf with a variety of smaller contests headlined with a $1,000 guaranteed contest with an $11USD buy-in.

After bombing out on last week’s picks with Jason Day with a crook back ruining any chance, let’s bounce back in a big way. This week I went straight to the King of Australian DFS jayk123 and asked him to enlighten me with plays for the Players championship

Tiger Woods – ($10,500 DK $8,400 MB) After initially picking Tyrrell Hatton to win, jayk123 had second thoughts and came back with Tiger. I don’t see why not! After sitting out Bay Hill last week with a neck injury, we believe that Woods is going to target these upcoming big tournaments whilst maintaining his now fragile body. Exceptional value in the Vegas odds and with the injury factor could go very under-owned in this stack field.

Justin Thomas – ($11,100 DK $8,900 MB) Out of the three highly priced golfers (Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlory), Thomas is the one that grades well for this challenging course. He is a world class ball striker and his current stats on the tour back that up (1st Strokes gained Approach, 2nd Strokes gained Tee to Green). We are looking for Thomas to be a solid player without the “meltdown” element to his game. We also believe that McIlory’s ownership will be too inflated after his consistent run of high finishes. Sure, McIlory has had an exceptional run of results bar his poor Sunday round at Bay Hill, but we will have Thomas at a lower ownership thank you!

Tony Finau – ($8,400 DK $6,700 MB) We both rate Finau very highly this week after his T25 at the WGC event in Mexico, with his ability to score big fantasy points through Birdie’s and Eagles. This is another low ownership play and a bit of a risk, as Finau has an afternoon tee time for the 1st round with predicted winds increasing throughout the day.

Tyrrell Hatton – ($7,300 DK $5,800 MB) After putting jayk on the spot for a winner for the tournament, we got the “troll at heart” in Hatton. Described by jayk as a “grumpy golfer”, I look at Hatton’s form and it is very good from a leader board results perspective (T19 at Mexico and T29 at Bay Hill) and he is currently ranked 2nd on the tour for strokes gained by putting. Fantastic price on DK and again will be super low owned.

Jason Kokrak – ($6,700 DK $5,400 MB) Out of the golfers under the $7K range on DK, Kokrak is certainly the most consistent and in form player here. Will be a chalk play with his impressive results, but we need his “bomber” mentality here to chase the birdies and eagles. Hasn’t missed a cut all season and hoping the results continue.

Rafa Cabrera Bello – ($7,400 DK $5,900 MB) What a result last week for Rafa, with an awesome first round at Bay Hill but then yo-yoing for the remaining three rounds. With salaries being released early by DraftKings we get RCB at a great discount. So this is my FADE this week. Purely that RCB is going to be “super-owned” as jayk calls it and there are fine plays around the same price range.
