Where To Attack?

AFL data tools

We will continue to target defenders against the Saints all season unless something significant changes. They have been giving up an absurd 84 points per player to the position this season, which is over 20 points above the league average. The defensive structure of the Saints this year under Ross Lyon results in their opponents constantly being hemmed into the back line with nowhere to move the ball but sideways. This has particularly benefited the key defenders.

This structure has also led to midfielders floating back and picking up uncontested marks, which boost their fantasy scores significantly. So stacking up the Port Adelaide backs along with their midfielders, particularly those that accumulate uncontested possessions looks to be an elite strategy on this slate.

Game Script – Port Adelaide backs and midfielders

VALUE PLAYS

Aliir Aliir ($8,730) will get plenty of opportunity in this matchup as outlined above. While he has topped out at mid-60’s this season, he has shown in past years the ability to rack up points with a combination of intercept marks and picking up chipping mark kicks. I expect his highest score for the year in this game and it should be around the 10x range of his price point.

Jase Burgoyne ($7,230) is solid value play on this slate at just above the minimum price. Last season he posted four 60+ fantasy point games, including an 81 point performance. This is the best matchup in the league and you can link up value Port backs on this slate and spend up through other positions.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Xavier Duursma ($9,860) is another player on Port Adelaide who will benefit significantly from this matchup. If you break down the points conceded a little deeper, wings who float back have been scoring over 5 points above the league average, and they will typically link up with the backs when they are over possessing the football. This makes Duursma a solid mid-range price option on this single game slate, with the potential for 80-90 point game in this matchup.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Connor Rozee ($15,640) has averaged a tick under 100 points per game this year at 99.8, but has racked up three games of 108+ from his last four matches. This will be the best matchup of all those games against the Saints who are giving up the most points in the league to midfielders. Rozee should float back and accumulate uncontested marks and disposals in this matchup.

Rowan Marshall ($16,560) will draw the second best matchup in the league for rucks this season against Port Adelaide. On the year they have been giving up 98 points per game to the opposition's number one ruckman. To make matters even better, they are now playing Brynn Teakle as their number one ruck and he is fresh off conceding 101 points to Bailey Williams from West Coast. Marshall is averaging 104 points per game this year and has not gone under 100 points in his last 5 games.
