It’s all come down to this, the big one. Collingwood and Brisbane will play off for AFL Premiership glory on the last Saturday of September, with 100,000 fans set to pack the MCG as old rival renew hostilities.

The Magpies have been the best team all year, topping the ladder before winning two nail-biting finals, but they will have their work cut out to contain the explosive Lions, who have overcome hoodoo after hoodoo to qualify for the main event.

Draftstars have put up a whopping $200,000 Guaranteed Main Contest for this one, as well as a wide variety of other lower stakes options with massive prize pools.

Weather

Melbourne – Mostly sunny, 29 degrees.

What more could you ask for? Players and fans alike will be greeted by hot and sunny conditions on Saturday, with a dry surface guaranteed. Given the temperature will push 30 degrees, fatigue could become a factor in the latter stages of the 2023 Grand Final.

Where To Attack?

There are very few trends to target on this slate, which is no surprise as these are the best two teams going around.

As such, game script will be the most relevant factor when it comes to selecting your line-ups. Collingwood and Brisbane have both been restrictive this finals campaign, conceding just six and five 90+ scores respectively, and those scores have come from players in a variety of positions on the field (midfielders, defenders, and ruckmen). Last week it was the Blues defenders who fared best against the Lions, so if you think Brisbane can win the midfield battle then Collingwood backs could provide value. Conversely, if you think the Pies rise to the occasion then their forwards could be slate breakers.

Game Script – Lions outside players

VALUE PLAYS

Brody Mihocek (DS $8,690)With Dan McStay out of the side due to injury, Mihocek will become Collingwood’s main target up forward this weekend. While Mihocek had a lean patch through July, he has bounced back well to record four scores of 73+ since then and has twice cracked 80, which would be a great return at this price point. Despite Collingwood losing both matches, Mihocek has returned scores of 73 and 64 against the Lions this season.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Conor McKenna (DS $10,360) has relished his second crack at AFL footy, producing a consistent first season for Brisbane. The exciting half-back has scored 84 and 62 in his two finals appearances and has shown a solid floor all season thanks to dominating the kick-ins, which bodes well for his scoring on Saturday. So does his form against the Pies, with scores of 90 and 81 against this opposition in 2023.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Nick Daicos (DS $16,340) is arguably the most important player on the ground in this decider, as his performance could determine the winner of the match. On return from an extended injury layoff, Daicos produced a ton straight up against the Giants and his gut running will be telling in a clash that is set to be played in scorching heat. Daicos junior was the star of the show against Brisbane in Round 3, scoring 126 DFS points from 38 touches and two goals.

Jack Crisp (DS $13,840) could be a fantastic POD on this Grand Final slate, with the masses likely to flock to the explosive yet inconsistent De Goey. Crisp has proven himself to be a finals performer over several years, starring for the Pies last September and getting them over the line last week with a 92 against GWS. Importantly, Crisp was given greater responsibility in the midfield last week, attending 65% of CBAs, more than double his season average.
