AFL

We get a traditional five-game Super Saturday slate for Round 7 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season. It's wall-to-wall football all afternoon, kicking things off with Brisbane hosting Fremantle at the GABBA in the afternoon, before Sydney and the GWS Giants clash in the battle of the bridge. Later in the day we get Western Bulldogs vs Hawthorn, followed by two night games as Carlton travel to Perth to face West Coast and North Melbourne and Melbourne square off at the MCG. While there are no classic battles between top-of-the-table teams, there are plenty of juicy games to target for fantasy purposes.

Draftstars has all the daily fantasy AFL lovers covered with a massive $75,000 guaranteed main contest and a wide variety of other contests, including qualifiers to the $750,000 AFL Star Final!

Weather

Brisbane - Partly cloudy, late shower or two. 25 degrees.

Sydney – High chance of rain. 22 degrees.

Melbourne – Partly cloudy, possible shower. 16 degrees.

Perth - Sunny, 21 degrees.

It looks like perfect football conditions across the country for Saturday except for in Sydney. The battle of the bridge could be underwater with up to 30mm of rain forecast. There is a huge range from 8mm to 30mm so keep an eye as lock approaches, but if it is extermely wet, avoid playing key positions players in that matchup and outside players who rely on uncontested football. I would be looking at the ruck contest and inside midifelders if it extremely wet.

Where to Attack?

AFL Data Tools

There are a number of solid options to consider for stacking up defenders on this slate. North Melbourne have given up the second most to the position this year at almost 11 points per player above league average. Hawthorn aren’t far behind in fourth spot at just over 7 points per player above league average. The sneaky option for me, however, is the targeting the Western Bulldogs who have given up 70 points per game (6th most in the league), but when you isolate the top three scorers, this jumps from the third highest average in the league at 90 points per game. This is a trend from last year as well, which I love as it gives us a great sample size to rely on.

AFL Data Tools

It's like shooting fish in a barrel for forwards on this slate, which is no real surprise given we have three of the bottom four teams on this slate as well as the Giants who are currently sitting 12th on the ladder. Out of North Melbourne, Hawthorn and West Coast, I love the fact that North Melbourne are 48.5 point underdogs, while the Eagles are 30.5 point underdogs. This means their opponent’s forwards should be given plenty of opportunity to hit the score board and boost their fantasy output.

Game Script – Hawthorn backs, Melbourne midfielders and forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Kade Chandler ($6,170) looks like one of the safest value plays of the year on this slate. He has posted four games of 64+ fantasy points form his six games and a 59 point game last week. All of these would be in that 10x value range at this price point. This week, however, as noted above the Demons draw an elite matchup against North Melbourne, especially for forwards. Melbourne are 48 point favourites and North have given up the most points in the league to forwards this year. We also know that Chandler can produce a large tournament winning score as he posted a massive 104 point game in round one.

Angus Sheldrick ($6,000) is coming in to play just his third career AFL game this week. He debuted in round 1 as a rookie last year, which shows you how highly the Swans rate this kid, but unfortunately injury set him back and he has since been putting up huge numbers in the VFL posting a 39 disposal, 2 goal game last week. This is a trend that continues on from his junior days where he had some of the bigger fantasy numbers you will find at that level. I think the Swans will give him an opportunity through the midfield, which should enable him to return value at this minimum price point.

Josh Weddle ($6,000) is a tall that will play across half back and potentially push up onto the wing. In a similar build to Marc Blicavs, he should get plenty of opportunity to rack up outside marks and kicks in the way that the Hawks currently play. It is also an elite matchup for this role against the Bulldogs so I like stacking him up with another Hawk defender.

MID-PRICED PLAYS

Charlie Curnow ($12,070) has an elite matchup in the league for a key forward. The Eagles have been giving up the third most points in the league to key forwards and every week it seems that one of the opposition's big forwards kicks a huge back against them. You can also go Harry McKay, or even stack both of them up together as a unique play.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Christian Petracca ($14,840) is at very nice price point for his matchup and ability on this slate. He has posted three consecutive games of 100+ and despite that is still priced in the $14k range. On this slate he draws the matchup against North Melbourne in which Melbourne should be win by a wide margin. This will enable Petracca to dominate both through the midfield, while also going forward and hitting the scoreboard, which is when he returns his biggest fantasy scores.
