Weather
Adelaide – Evening showers, 26 degrees.
A wet and wild weekend is in store for Adelaide and the first drops of rain are set to fall on Friday. With up to 6mm of rain forecast for the evening, contested style players may be the safest selections in the Richmond vs Sydney match.
Where To Attack?
There are plenty of avenues to attack on this slate, so I can’t wait to see an exciting variety of line-ups. Perhaps the most obvious play on Friday will be to stack Fremantle, as Gold Coast’s disappointing start to the year has seen them leak fantasy points in just about every position.
Both the Suns and Dockers have given up points to opposition backs this year, and since this game is more likely to be played in dry conditions I will be favouring the defenders from each side over options from Richmond and Sydney.
As well as giving up points down back, Gold Coast have conceded the most points to opposition midfielders in 2023, particularly to inside midfielders who can dominate the contest. Given the 12-point swing against Suns mids, you almost have no choice but to roster some Fremantle onballers.
Game Script – Fremantle stacks
VALUE PLAYS
Matthew Johnson (DS $6,000) was hyped up as a David Mundy replacement in preseason, but has not been given a full game to strut his stuff until now. The promising midfielder has looked lively enough in two substitute appearances, and he has been named in the midfield for Friday’s clash, so I think a value return is a strong possibility given his role and soft matchup.
Corey Wagner (DS $6,000) is back in the AFL system after a few years in state footy, and he is ready to make the most of his second chance. Wagner averaged 54 DFS points in his last AFL season with the Demons, and as a mature recruit, he should be able to make an impact straightaway for the Dockers in a fantasy-friendly role at halfback.
MID PRICED PLAYS
James Rowbottom (DS $11,750) could be a low ownership slate breaker at just under $12k. Sure, an average of 70 points with a high score of 85 doesn’t read overly well, but Rowbottom attended a whopping 95% of CBAs last week and his tackling game will be perfectly suited to the wet weather that is likely to descend upon Adelaide Oval.
PREMIUM PLAYS
Caleb Serong (DS $15,140) has taken his game to another level in 2023. With three consecutive tons, Serong is averaging just shy of 108 DFS points as the focal point of Fremantle’s midfield, and he gets the best smash spot in the league on Friday. Lock him in.
Lachie Weller (DS $13,760) has benefited from Gold Coast’s sluggish start to the year, racking up touches in the backline. Since returning from injury, Weller has peeled off three 88+ scores and Fremantle should afford him the opportunities to do the same again.
