Round 4 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season kicks off this Thursday night with another blockbuster as we head up to the Gabba where Brisbane will host the red hot Collingwood. The Magpies are one of two remaining undefeated teams and becoming everyone’s favourite for the flag this season, while the Lions will look to get their season back on track at home.

Weather

Brisbane – Mostly sunny, slight chance of a shower, 29 degrees

A typical warm night in Brisbane for this Thursday game. Despite slight chances of showers during the day there will be no impact on the game from rainfall, but expect conditions to be typically slippery from the humidity up at the Gabba. I will not be letting any conditions impact my fantasy team choices on this slate.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

While neither team has given up significant fantasy points this season, Collingwood have been the hardest team in the league to score against so far while Brisbane are sitting right on league average. However the Lions have conceded a high number of possessions. The particular area of interest is the fact that Brisbane have given up the third most contested possessions, while Collingwood have racked up the third most contested possessions. So I would be looking potentially the Magpies winning the contested battle and rostering some of the Collingwood inside midfielders.

AFL Data Tools

This is a small sample size through three rounds and it is likely this stat will straighten itself out as the season goes on. But we have to consider the fact that Brisbane has given up 70 points per game to opposition forwards so far this year, which is over 10 points per player above league average.

Game Script – Collingwood inside midfielders and forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Reef McInnes ($6,000) Finding value plays on this slate is extremely difficult. Reef McInnes has been heavily hyped since joining Collingwood and through this preseason. At the lower level he is a midfielder, although it is hard to see him getting much of an opportunity at this level, but if he gets a full game I expect to see him in at least a couple of centre bounces. He has also shown ability to hit the scoreboard with three goals in two sub games already this year and as noted above it is potentially an elite matchup for Magpies forwards.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Daniel McStay ($10,620) will be the Magpies starting ruckman this game after Darcy Cameron went down with injury last week. While McStay didn’t exactly set the world on fire in the ruck contests with just 4 hit outs last week, he did return 77 fantasy points and should be able to pick up a marks and possessions around the ground in this role.

Oscar McInerney ($12,820) We can play both ruckman as McStay has dual position eligibility as a forward, and in this matchup, both plays look like elite selections. McInerney will absolutely dominate the ruck contests, as we saw last week when Nankervis had 39 hit outs and 120 fantasy points against the Magpies depleted ruck setup. Further in McInerney’s favour the Lions have droped Darcy Fort, which means the big O will have the ruck role all to himself.

Dayne Zorko ($12,800) I just love his upside at home at this midprice point. We saw in his first game of the season he still has the ability to go big racking up a massive 116 points against the Demons. While this will be a much harder matchup for his position, I like utilising him in big tournaments due to the limited value options on the single game slate.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Jordan De Goey ($13,940) has been leading the way from CBA perspective against the Magpies this season who do split their rotations through the middle quite heavily. He is a contested monster while also being able to go forward and hit the scoreboard, which means he is attacking both of the Lions weaknesses through the early part of this season. De Goey has returned over 100 points in two of the three games so fare this year.
