AFL MCG

We wind up Round 3 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season with a fun three game Sunday slate. Gold Coast will host the raining premiers Geelong in the opening game, which will likely be an absolute belting and see the Cats get their first win of the year. Then we move to the MCG where two of this seasons premiership hopefuls meet in Melbourne and Sydney, which should be the most exciting contest of the day before capping things off with the western derby between West Coast and Fremantle.

Weather

Gold Coast - High chance of showers. 26 degrees
Melbourne - Partly cloudy. 19 degrees
Perth - Partly cloudy. 27 degrees

Perfect weather conditions for football on this Sunday across the country. There are certainly no signficiant rain concerns and if anything, it might be a touch hot on the Gold Coast and in Perth where both WA sides should be more than used ot the conditions.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

The Gold Coast have had a miserable start to the season and things will not get any easier this week as the face the mighty Geelong. The Suns have been getting ripped apart through the midfield conceding 96 points per player through two games, which is 16 points above league average. Surprisingly it is Geelong who have conceded the second most however with the easier matchup this week I will be looking to stack the Cats middle. A sneaky option would be to load up on the Swans middle as they face Melbourne who gave up one of the highest amounts to the position in 2022 and the trend has continued through two games in 2023.

AFL Data Tools

There are two solid options to target in the ruck on this slate with Sydney giving up 99 points per game this season to the opposition number one ruckman, while West Coast are not far behind conceding 95 per game.

Game Script – Geelong game stacks

VALUE PLAYS

Matt Taberner ($7,490) This is a hard pill to swallow after last week and there is every possibility that Taberner is now past his best. That said, the Eagles have been getting smashed by key defenders for years now and things haven’t changed this season giving up 102 points to Jesse Hogan last week (3 goals 4 behinds) and 76 points to Nick Larkey in round one (6 goals straight). So this presents a great opportunity to cash in on what should be a very low owned value play.

Tanner Bruhn ($8,080) has been getting plenty of opportunity through the Cats midfield with 16 centre bounces in round one and 9 last week. This has yet to return a decent fantasy score, however Geelong is 0-2 after playing two very strong opponents. This week things should open up for them and Bruhn in particular will find things a lot easier. With opportunity he should be able to return 10x against this price point.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Tom Stewart ($10,960) returns from injury and gets a ridiculous price point for a player of his calibre. The last two seasons Stewart has average over 94 points per game and as a result of his injury impacted round one has had his price reduced to the $10k range. The critical consideration to keep in mind is that Stewart was not expected to be back this week and given the Cats history with late changes keep an eye on teams as we lead up to lock. But if he plays he is a total lock at this price point.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Brodie Grundy ($13,490) will take over number one ruck duties for Melbourne due to the injury to Max Gawn. As we saw last week that resulted in a 95 point game and this week Grundy draws one of the best matchups in the league against Peter Ladhams who has given up 99 points per game to the opposition number one ruckman.

Andrew Brayshaw ($16,540) If it aint broke don’t fix it as they say. Brayshaw is as good as anyone in the league at the fantasy game and really should be in the next tier of price bracket. Last week he returned us a 122 point game in a loss and this week he faces the Eagles who have had all kinds of trouble through the midfield in recent seasons.
