Weather

Launceston - Cloudy, 17 degrees
Melbourne - Cloudy, showers clearing, 16 degrees
Sydney - High chance of showers, 21 degrees
Adelaide - Cloudy, 19 degrees

The weather is now starting to look more like football weather this week as we get further away from summer. That said, it is really only Sydney where we should consider the impact of rain with up to 6mm potentially hitting during the afternoon when the game is on. Keep an eye on this as fantasy lock approaches and if we are seeing the conditions likely to impact the game potentially look to inside players and rucks in this matchup.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

We touched on this last week, but as the weeks go on the evidence is getting stronger. St Kilda are conceding 89 points per player to defenders through two games, which is over 21 points above the league average and over 8 points per player above the next highest team. This is looking like a direct result of Ross Lyon’s defensive structure which is getting players behind the ball and forcing opposition back to possess the ball, particularly the talls.

AFL Data Tools

It is no surprise to see Hawthorn giving up the second most points in the league to forwards through two games this season. They are the current favourite for the wooden spoon and while this might have been ear marked as a battle that helped decide that honour this year during the preseason, North have jumped out to a 2-0 start and will be looking to make it an unbelievable three straight wins to start the season in this matchup.

Game Script – Essendon defenders, North Melbourne midfielders and forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Marcus Windhager ($7,680) comes in for his first full game of the season after an injury interrupted his lead up to the opening round. Prior to this injury he was having a heralded pre-season and expected to be a feature of the Saints midfield. This week he comes in and should replace some of the midfield minutes that the Saints have lost to superstar Jack Steele so I will be jumping right on board at this low price point and watch him return value. To end last season when the Saints put him into the middle he posted games of 84, 78 and 84 from his last 5 games.

Will Phillips ($6,270) is another pre-season fantasy favourite who looks to get his first full game of the season after subbing into the match in round one. He attended 9 centre bounces in that match after coming on at quarter time and racked up 17 disposals for 46 fantasy points. With a full game Phillips should have plenty of opportunity to pay off his salary at least 10x in one of the best matchups in the league for midfielders.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Jordan Ridley ($11,790) started the year off strong with an 87 point game against the Hawks but could not back it up last week against the Gold Coast where Essendon spent most of the game on the attack. This should be a totally different contest, where I expect the Saints to hem the Bombers into the back line and allow their defenders to possess the football for periods of time just as we have seen in the first two rounds. Ridley has shown the ability in the past to go well above the ton fantasy mark in the right matchup and role.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Josh Kelly ($14,480) is just far too cheap at this price point for his fantasy scoring capability and his current role as a mainstay in the Giants midfield. In round one he was well on his way to a huge score before injury took him down in the fourth quarter. If he can’t make it through the entire game in this matchup at home I expect a 110+ and perhaps bigger. Lock and load.

Luke Davies-Uniacke ($16,330) is breaking out in a big way this season, posting a massive 123 fantasy points over in the West last week to help spearhead the North midfield in their second win over Fremantle. He will have even greater potential against the struggling Hawks this week, subject to a tag. As mentioned above this is one of the best matchups in the league for midfielders with Hawthorn conceding the second most points in the league to the position through two games this year.
