Weather
Melbourne - Cloudy, 16 degrees.
Gold Coast - Sunny, 22 degrees.
Sydney - Mostly sunny, 17 degrees.
Adelaide - Scattered showers, 15 degrees.
There could be some showers in Adelaide for the late game, but it shouldn’t be anything too major. Just keep an eye on the weather radar closer to the bounce. Otherwise, it’s clear skies for AFL footy around the country on Saturday.
Where To Attack?
North Melbourne continue to leak more fantasy points than any other opposition, and they are the worst team of the last five matches, despite some improved performances on the scoreboard. They are the worst team for conceding points to midfielders and forwards, while they are top four for leaking to defenders. The ruck position is the only position where they hold their own, with Goldstein and Xerri right on the league average. Richmond themselves are above average in several positions for conceding points as well, so this might be the game to target.
It’s been the trend of the year, but the Saints continue to give up points to opposition defenders. They come up against the Cats who have several players in their back half who like the cheap +6’s. Load up!
As an alternative option, we also have Essendon, Richmond and Carlton on this slate who are in the top five for conceding points to the Top 3 defenders of the opposition this season. Note that Essendon have tightened up significantly over the last five matches.
VALUE PLAYS
Shannon Neale ($7,010) has been given the keys to the #1 ruck role at the Cats in just his fourth game of AFL in a must-win match. No pressure! He was pretty good last week, scoring 67 in a forward role, which would be enough to hit value, but he crashed some packs and competed really well to show that he has some genuine potential. It’s a tough match up against Rowan Marshall who will stretch him around the ground, but Neale should be able to get first hands on the ball enough times to hit value at that price. You also have the option of playing him in the ruck or as a forward.
Jack Riewoldt ($8,940) is going to be fed a ton of footy in his farewell match for the Tigers against the lowly Kangaroos who leak points to opposition forwards. He’s averaged around the 50-point mark which is probably his floor here. He’s certain to get a couple of cheap goals handed to him standing in the goal square, and if he can get on the end of a couple of passes, he might even kick a bag. Trent Cotchin is another Tiger playing his farewell match who you may like to consider for similar reason.
MID PRICED PLAYS
Max Holmes ($10,230) has had two really poor weeks in a row, and even copped a lot of criticism in the media, so I don’t mind backing him in here at a discounted price and hopefully going against the field who might be jumping off. Draws a good match up here against the Saints if he can link up with the defenders and find some space on the wing. Has two tons (plus a 99 and 98) this season, and that’s the sort of number we’d like to see again here.
Jacob Hopper ($12,260) is one of several well-priced Tigers midfielders who you could target on this slate. Hopper is coming off an injury-affected score which has given us a discounted price that looks attractive. Should get an easy time of it against the Roos midfield and a ton is on for him here.
PREMIUM PLAYS
Mitch Duncan ($14,160) is one of several Geelong mid-backs you could look at against the Saints. Tom Stewart is the logical choice as a defender but Ross Lyon has already said they’ll be putting some time into restricting Stewart’s run. So unless Lyon is playing mind games, a pivot to Duncan might not be a bad move. In recent weeks, Duncan has been able to find some excellent consistency with a floor of 85 in his last eight matches, however he also brings a nice ceiling with three 120+ scores this season.
Lachie Whitfield ($14,290) is a nice option for the Giants if you want to target the Bombers leaking points to defenders. Whitfield loves running around and racking up cheap possessions as a distributor from the backline, so if the Bombers do tighten up and leave the backs to run around, then Whitfield has the ceiling to cash in. With seven tons, and two 130+ scores, that’s what we’re looking for at a premium price.
