Round 23 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season kicks off with a top-of-the-table blockbuster with Collingwood hosting Brisbane at Marvel Stadium. Collingwood made their way back onto the winners list last week, overcoming a slow start to defeat the Cats on Friday night. It was an entirely different game last week for the Lions, rocketing out to a strong lead before clinging on for a one-goal win against the Adelaide Crows.

Where To Attack?

This is one of the trickier matchups you will find to break down by the numbers. Neither team concedes high numbers or accumulates high numbers, so there may be a need to think a little laterally in this one and find some value in the lower salary selections in creating a team here. Also beware of Collingwood’s potential to rest a prime mover, with the Pies having one eye on the finals with a Top 2 position locked in barring a miracle.

Game Script – Mixed bag!

VALUE PLAYS

Jakob Ryan ($6,000) and his mullet will be flying around in his first game at AFL level. Ryan averages 19.5 disposals at VFL level and just under 12 kicks a game, and the Pies will look to test his ability to run and carry here in what should be a high quality contest. Should be right at home running the lines with the likes of Quaynor, Maynard and even Crisp, and is worth playing at that salary. With the Pies close to locked into a Top 2 finish, it would be a surprise to see them not rest a top player as their sub in this one.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Patrick Lipinski ($11,680) saw an uptick in Centre Bounce Attendances last week, entering the centre square for a quarter of all centre bounces. It resulted in one of Lipinski’s strongest performances since his shoulder injury. His inclusion resulted in an uptick in competitive output from the Pies in the middle, and at this salary he is worth considering here this week. A case could also be made for Taylor Adams, especially with Jordan De Goey and his 79% CBA’s last week coming out of the team.

AFL Data

Keidean Coleman ($11,280) returns to the side this week with Jack Gunston missing through injury. His recent form has been solid prior to his facial injury, so shouldn’t have missed too much by way of conditioning during his absence. Another who will be utilised for his speed and foot skills to overcome the zoning team defensive style of the Pies. Looks to be a solid mid-priced selection on more recent output.

Darcy Cameron ($12,960) is a player the Pies will be glad to have back in the fold, having missed him dearly in their Easter Thursday loss to the Lions at the GABBA. Oscar McInerney had an absolute night out in that one, as he went up against Daniel McStay, Billy Frampton and Ash Johnson. Cameron looked to change things up a touch in the second half against the Cats, keeping his hit outs a little closer to hit feet, which can bring him into the play a little more. With Moore out I expect Cameron to make more of a concerted effort to get back and assist defensively as well.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Hugh McCluggage ($15,670) is an interesting option here, with the Pies struggling a touch with matching up through the middle against genuine pace. The likes of Neale and Dunkley are likely to match up well with the likes of Adams, Mitchell and Pendlebury, but its McCluggage ability to use his pace as a small mover, as impact the scoreboard, that means he appeals in this one.
