Weather

Melbourne – Cloudy, 21 degrees

Sydney – Shower or two, 25 degrees

Perth – Shower or two, 26 degrees

For the first time this season, rain may be a relevant consideration for a DFS slate. Perth could see up to 8mm of rain before the twilight game kicks off, while the Swans and Hawks may have to contend with mid-game showers. As such, be wary of selecting outside players from those games.

Where To Attack?

With this being the second round of the season, we don’t have a huge amount of data to look at in 2023 yet. That said, we can take some cues from the matches played last weekend.

Carrying on from last season, the Hawks and Suns are conceding huge points to midfielders again in 2023. Hawthorn’s young midfield is especially vulnerable, with James Worpel just about the most experienced operator. Sydney’s talented unit should be way too good this week, so I expect some Swans midfield stacks.

In the ruck, Sydney’s second-string big man Peter Ladhams was exposed by Jarrod Witts last week, as the GC star racked up 129 DFS points. Normally, I would recommend selecting Ladhams’ opposite number, but this week Hawthorn will run with a dual ruck setup which makes their options less appealing.

VALUE PLAYS

Braeden Campbell (DS $6,000) is one of the best of a bad bunch when it comes to value on this slate. The best of the value rests in the midfield, but I would rather spend up there on Sunday so Campbell gets a gig down back. The young talent is growing in confidence with every game and the Swans love the ball in his hands. Campbell managed 58 last week and if he can match that it’s a win for us.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Matt Flynn (DS $10,380) – Let’s try this again. I was an advocate for Flynn last week playing as the #1 ruck for GWS and he let us down with 57. This week he will play the same role against the inexperienced Bailey Williams. With a proven ceiling of 100 points, Flynn could be a slate breaker if the field jumps off him.

Will Setterfield (DS $11,820) is next up in my rinse and repeat of last week’s recommendations. Given his preferred role as an inside CBA midfielder, Setterfield immediately impressed on club debut, scoring a whopping 122 DFS points. Having cemented his spot in Essendon’s midfield, the big bull should score well again against Gold Coast’s leaky midfield, so it’s worth paying the extra $1k this week.

Finn Callaghan (DS $8,930) fulfilled his preseason hype with a solid Round 1 outing, and this week his scoring should see a boost. Callaghan has been touted to move into the CBA rotation this week in the absence of Josh Kelly and Harry Perryman, so he’s a great chance to better his 83 from last Sunday. At this price, that’s a great return.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Errol Gulden (DS $14,030) – There’s an element of risk involved in this pick, as Gulden has been under an injury cloud this week. After pumping out 99 points against Gold Coast, the silky left-footer has been nursing a calf concern, but if he hits the park on Sunday there is a high chance of a ceiling game. Gulden has been rotating between the midfield and half-forward, two positions where the ball should fall Sydney’s way.
