MCG Saturday

The Super Saturday slate for Round 2 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season is here, which means we get another day of wall-to-wall action with a four-game slate to fulfil our daily fantasy needs. Things kick off with arguably the game of the day between Collingwood and Port Adelaide at the MCG. Both sides are coming off massive wins in Round 1 and will be looking forward to move to an impressive 2-0 this week. The nightcap should be just as entertaining as Western Bulldogs host St Kilda at Marvel Stadium with Ross Lyon looking to lead the troops to their second straight win.

Things are still looking warm again for this Saturday’s lineup of AFL games across Australia. There isnt any rain expected in Melbourne or Adelaide, while Perth’s forecast is minimal. I would just consider the chance for a thunderstorm but all things considered 1mm of rain shouldn’t impact any game. Let’s get down to some fantasty picks!

Where To Attack?

AFL Data

The Saints gave up the most points in the league to defenders in the first round, however this is where the small sample size comes into play. This is likely to be one of the bigger outlier numbers you will see this year as to say the Dockers over possessed the football in their back line in this game would be an understatement. That said, if this was even in part due to a result of the structure that Ross Lyon has employed, jumping on early to the trend could result in a big results.

AFL Data Tools
The Crows midfield got carved up in round one by the Giants, noting that Adelaide have looked to employ a much faster pace this season that potentially will result in their opposition possessing the football for a greater amount of time while the Crows play more direct. It certainly worked out that way in round one with the Crows giving up 94 points per player to the position, the second highest amount for any team in round one.

Game Script – Fremantle stacks

The Dockers are favoured by over 5 goals playing at home in this matchup with North Melbourne who are one of the favourites for the spoon this year. They are coming off a round one loss and will want to get the season back on track. I love stacking up Dockers backs at home and you can link this right through to the midfield and forwards in this matchup. Consider playing North Melbourne defenders along with Fremantle midfield and forward stacks.

VALUE PLAYS

Toby McLean (DS $7,450) comes in this week as the Bulldogs have already been hit by the injury bug. McLean had a massive preseason and should get opportunity up the ground in addition to his typical high half forward role. The attraction with this is that we have seen McLean post big fantasy scores in the past when the role is fantasy friendly and he is coming in a near basement prices for this game.

Josh Rachele (DS $8,430) was extremely low owned in round one and came out absolutely guns blazing with a near best on ground performance for the Crows and posting a massive 105 fantasty points. You can bet his ownership will sky rocket this week, but I love the play again with Rachele pushing well up the ground and running through the midfield at times attending 9 centre bounces in round one.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Jordan Clark (DS $12,150) will be a consistent feature in my Fremantle stacks. He has been a shining light through the preseason and constantly features in the link chains from half back to half forward. In round one he notched up 103 fantasy points and he is still nicely priced in the mid-range while the other Docker backs have hit that premium price.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Andrew Brayshaw (DS $16,520) will be my lock in premium midfielder for Fremantle stacks. He is about to face what we can expect to be one of the better matchups in the league for midfielders this season in North Melbourne (who conceded one of the highest amounts in the league to the position in 2022), and to make things even better it is at home where Brayshaw consistently shines. He posted 114 points in a loss last week and brings GPP winning upside in scoring potential.

Rowan Marshall (DS $15,480) disappointed last week after coming in as one of the most-hyped fantasy rucks this year as he takes over the sole role as number one ruck. I will be going right back to the well with him this week and absolutely love the matchup against Tim English who has historically given up one of the highest amount of fantasy points to opposition number one ruckman in the league.
