AFL Carlton

Round 19 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season brings a massive five game Super Saturday slate to meet our daily fantasy needs. The afternoon kicks off with two tasty games from a fantasy perspective with Hawthorn and Richmond meeting at the MCG, and Carlton hosting the lowly West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. We then get a couple of blockbuster clashes with Brisbane hosting Geelong at the Gabba in a battle between 3rd and 5th place, before the top two teams in the league square off in Port Adelaide and Collingwood at night. The night cap out west has Fremantle hosting Sydney that could present some fantasy gold in the good old fashioned hammer game.

Draftstars have put up a $60,000 Guaranteed Main Contest, as well as a wide variety of other lower stakes options with big prize pools.

Weather

Melbourne - Becoming cloudy, 15 degrees.

Brisbane - Sunny, 21 degrees.

Adelaide - Showers, 14 degrees.

Perth - Clouds clearing, 19 degrees.

Pretty much perfect football conditions across Australia tomorrow. The only concern is in Adelaide where there is a chance of showers through the morning but should be cleared up completely by night time when Port Adelaide and Collingwood get underway. Let’s play fantasy!

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

Hawthorn have accumulated the second most possessions in the league this season and this includes the most uncontested possessions. They love racking up these uncontested touches across the backline and their matchup against the Tigers looks ideal for this type of game style. Richmond have given up the second most points in the league defenders and at the wide spaces of the MCG I expect the backs to rack up the fantasy scores.

An alternative to this play is stacking up the Eagles backs in Carlton stacks. I expect the ball to be in the Eagles backline for most of the contest and the Blues have given up the fourth most points in the league to the top three scoring defenders.

We can pair the midfielders and forwards together on this slate. No surprise that West Coast and Hawthorn, who are sitting last and third last respectively on the ladder, are in the top few teams for points conceded to midfielders and forwards. Carlton will be the obvious stack on this slate as they are over 57 point favourites against West Coast, but Richmond stacks are the sneaky alternative.

Game Script – Hawthorn backs, Carlton midfielders and forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Paddy Dow ($8,090) / Oliver Hollands ($8,640) / Ed Curnow ($8,610)

There is a limited number of bargain basement value options on this slate that stand out, particularly considering it is a five game slate. But with Carlton without Patrick Cripps, Adam Cerra and Matthew Kennedy, there will be a significant opening for midfield time that needs to be assumed by other players and value can be derived from this.

Paddy Dow’s natural position is an inside midfielder and while he has yet to show any real fantasy scoring prowess, you would think in this matchup he will finally get an extended run at it and should be able to hit an upside of 80+ points assuming the game is a thrashing.

Ed Curnow offers huge upside, but has not played any real midfield time since early in the year, while Oliver Hollands will get to the play on the wing and has already shown 10x upside at this price point this season.

MID PRICED PLAYS

George Hewett ($11,880) should get his first full game in the midfield since early in the season. He attended 53% of the Blues centre bounces last week and now with both Cripps and Cerra gone, I expect that to go up to the 80% range. Last year Hewett demonstrated his fantasy scoring ability if he plays a pure midfield role and even this year he has shown a GPP winning ceiling with a 124 fantasy point game.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Luke Jackson ($14,080) will assume number one ruck duties this week as Sean Darcy is once again out with injury. Earlier this year when Darcy went down, Jackson notched up three straight games of 108, 119 and 94 fantasy points. This week he has what should be an elite matchup at home against Sydney who are currently rucking with Hayden McLean who gave up 140 fantasy points to a similar type of ruck in Tim English last week.

Sam Walsh ($14,880)like Hewett, I expect Walsh to see an increase in his role as an inside midfielder in this game. Walsh started the season like a house on fire notching up just one game under 100 points from his first 7 matches. Since he has been down on form as the Blues have played him in various positions from forward flank to the wing. This week should be predominately inside midfield and in the best matchup in the league for midfielders I expect a return to a big 100+ point game.

Charlie Curnow ($14,130)it is no secret the Eagles have given up insane points to forwards this season. And they consistently have trouble with key forwards. We saw the damage Curnow did earlier in the season against the Eagles where he posted a ridiculous 151 fantasy points from 9 goals over in Perth. This game will be in his home confines at Marvel so while it is unlikely to be as big, the upside is there, and in a game where Carlton are favoured by over 57 points, my Blues forward stacks start and end with Charlie.
