Round 17 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season kicks off this Thursday night with a critical game between Richmond and Sydney at the MCG. Both sides are sitting on 6 wins, which is 2 wins behind the log jam at 8th, which means the loser of this game will likely have any slim hopes remaining of playing finals finished for good in 2023.

Melbourne - High chance of showers, 15 degrees.

There could be some light showers at the MCG during the game Thursday night, however it shouldn’t impact the fantasy scoring. Keep an eye on the conditions as we get closer to the bounce.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

The Tigers continue to give up points to defenders in 2023 at over 4 points per player above league average each week. They are also giving up 91 points per game to the opposition's top three scoring backs, so similar to the strategy we applied last week against the Tigers that paid off nicely, this week we can stack up the Swans defenders.

AFL Data Tools

Amazingly the Swans concede below average fantasy points in total despite sitting 13th on the ladder. The only area they give an above average fantasy score is to forwards, and even this is only barely above the league average by 1.3 points per player. That said, it aligns nicely for the game script in this matchup with the Tigers favourites to win the game at home.

Game Script – Sydney backs, Richmond midfielders and forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Sam Banks ($6,000) is making his debut this week and we can expect him to play the get some opportunity on the wing. In this role at the VFL level he has been able to produce solid fantasy scores notching up four games of 86+ points from his last 7 matches. Given this is a single game slate with little salary relief it is a solid option to allow us to spend up on premium players.

Jack Riewoldt (8,290) has been having a run of games from his last three outings, however this might present us with a solid opportunity for a low ownership play. Despite his poor form he did post a massive 105 point game against the GWS Giants four weeks ago, indicating he still has the upside potential to win us a tournament. This is a solid matchup for Jack at home at the MCG in a game where the Tigers are favoured and the Swans give up points to forwards.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Nick Blakey ($11,890) looks to have taken greater control of the Swans kick in duties in recent weeks as Sydney have moved Jake Lloyd further up the ground at times. This has resulted in a consistent patch of disposals but has not quite translated to the huge fantasy scores that we would like to see. That said, this is an elite matchup for defenders and in particular the Tigers give up a significant amount of points above league average to the designated kicker.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Toby Nankervis ($15,480) is having a monster season averaging 104 fantasy points per game, and on this slate he draws one of the best matchups in the league against Tom Hickey. The Swans have been giving up the fifth most points in the league to the opponents number one ruckman and this number has exploded over the last five weeks with Hickey returning to the lineup.

AFL Data Tools

Tim Taranto ($17,690) was well held last week up at the Gabba recording his first sub 100 point game of the season. I expect a massive bounce back game this week at home on the MCG. He is leading the entire competition in scoring and given the cheaper options on the slate it is possible to fit in his large salary.
