We are back to a super Saturday style slate for Round 16 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season with a massive four games of action to dive into. Things kick off with a drooling matchup for daily fantasy players as Adelaide host the 17th placed Kangaroos in what should be the favourite game of the day for stackers. The Western Bulldogs host Fremantle in the second game before the Gold Coast take on the near-impossible task of keeping their finals chase alive against the top-placed Collingwood. Finally, in the hammer game we get what will likely be the most competitive game of the day with the 6th placed Essendon hosting the 2nd placed Port Adelaide at the MCG.

Weather

Adelaide – High chance of showers, 15 degrees.

Gold Coast – Mostly sunny, 20 degrees.

Melbourne - Chance of showers, 14 degrees.

Weather looks like ideal conditions for football across the country for Saturday’s slate of games. Monitor the rainfall in Adelaide closer to the bounce, however I wouldn’t expect anything that would impact your fantasy rostering decisions.

Where To Attack?

North Melbourne are second last on the ladder and, as you would expect, have been getting worked by opposition midfields. They have given up the third most points in the league to the position this season and 106 points per game to the top three scoring players at the position. This bodes well for Adelaide stacks given they are already 44 point favourites. That will be a popular play however, so if you are looking to go contrarian consider stacking up the Western Bulldogs midfielders as they host the Dockers who have given up the fifth most points to mids this season.

Not much to explain here. North Melbourne are second last with just 2 wins and as a result have been giving up big scores all season. They have conceded over 9 points above league average to opposition forwards and stacking up the Crows forward line on this slate is an elite play.

Game Script – Adelaide midfielders and forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Riley Bonner ($8,170) has far from set the world on fire this season, but with some interrupted games recently we have seen his price point come all the way down to $8k. As noted above, Port Adelaide backs have an elite matchup against the Bombers who have given up the second most points in the league to the position and I love stacking up the Power backs. You can pair Bonner up with one of their other value defenders or even matchup him with their premium back in Dan Houston depending on the rest of your roster.

Will Phillips ($8,940) continues to draw plenty of midfield time and is showing a greater capacity to translate that into fantasy output. He racked up back-to-back 90 point games before seeing a drop off the last two weeks, despite still finding plenty of possessions. North will see Davies-Uniacke return, however he will take Greenwood's midfield time who has been omitted. Phillips should be a nice point of difference on this slate with other players being scared off by his recent games.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Izak Rankine ($11,540) The Crows forward stacks will be the popular play on this slate. They are all expensive enough however, given the Crows recent run. Rankine is in form, fresh off a 100-point game last week against the league's best team in Collingwood. This week the matchup gets much easier with North Melbourne giving up the second most points in the league to forwards this season. Pairing him up with one of the Crows talls, Taylor Walker or Darcy Fogarty, will be a strong forward stack on this slate.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Sean Darcy ($13,360) will be better for the run after returning from injury last week and draws the best matchup in the league for rucks. Despite having an all Australian level season himself, English has continued to give up huge fantasy scores to his opponents. Conceding 100 points per game to the opposition's number one ruckman is the highest mark in the league in 2023, and Darcy should absolutely monster him in the ruck contests and in the marking contests.

Rory Laird ($16,510) has been as consistent as you could want with just one game under 100 points from his last 10. From his last five matches he has posted two 131-point games and a 124-point outing. He has the upside, isn’t as expensive has Jordan Dawson and is less likely to draw defensive attention by North. I will be stacking Laird up with other Crows midfielders, as they are over 44 point favourites in this matchup and North concede the second most points in the league to midfielders.
