We're back to a full round of nine games for Round 16 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season and things get underway Thursday night as the Brisbane Lions host the Richmond Tigers at the GABBA. While there is a gap between these two sides on the ladder right now, it is still a key game for both. Brisbane are sitting in third and will be keen to keep a gap between themselves and the teams below so they can lock in a top four spot. Meanwhile Richmond continue to make a charge for a finals position currently sitting a single win below the 8th placed Crows.

Draftstars has put together a $60,000 main contest for this match, as well as more qualifiers for the $750,000 AFL Star Final later in the year!

Absolutely perfect weather conditions for football at the GABBA this Thursday night! Let’s select some fantasy teams.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

The Tigers continue to give up points to defenders in 2023 at over 4 points per player above league average each week. They are giving up 91 points per game to the opposition's top three scoring backs, so I love stacking up a value Brisbane back with a player with high scoring potential on this single game slate.

AFL Data Tools

Richmond continue each year to concede a high number of fantasy points to ruckmen. This year they have given up 97 points per game to their opponent's number one big man, which is a massive 14.4 points above the league average. This has been even bigger in the last five rounds at 102 points per game. Toby Nankervis is having an outstanding fantasy season himself averaging over 106 points per game, but Oscar has been one of the toughest matchups in the league this season.

Game Script – Brisbane backs and midfielders

VALUE PLAYS

Keidan Coleman ($9,890) let us down last week but I will go right back to him in my Lions back stacks. Harris Andrews' price has risen after paying off for us last week and it is unlikely that he will match that output even with a positive matchup. Coleman will still be the number one user coming out of half back with Rich out of the lineup and has shown in the past the ability to rack up a big score for this price point.

Brandon Starcevich ($6,910) / Ryan Lester ($8,770) offer nice value options in this matchup. As noted above, the Tigers have given up the third most points to backs this season, and this has continued to increase over the last five rounds. Starcevich has posted four games of 50+ from his last give matches, and while there might not be the upside there, given he is in the $6k range, a 50-point game on a single game slate might be enough with little value on offer.

Lester on the other hand paid off last week with an 83-point game and has shown in the past the ability to hit a 10x score at this price point. If you can afford him, I like his role over Starcevich but the decision will depend on what you would like to pay up for.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Oscar McInerney ($13,040) draws the third best matchup in the league on this slate with the Tigers giving up 97 points per game to opposition number one rucks. This has been a consistent trend over Nankervis' career despite the fact he is having a very productive season himself in 2023. Oscar will be rucking solo this week and has shown massive upside with a 134-point game just two weeks ago.

Zac Bailey ($11,670) has been seeing increasing time in the midfield the last few weeks attending over 40% of the Lion’s centre bounces. This has resulted in Bailey posting scores of 75, 112, 66 and 94 from his last four games. There is adequate upside for a single game slate at this price point given his role and ability to hit the scoreboard. The Lions are favourites in this matchup at home and I love putting Bailey into Brisbane stacks.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Lachie Neale ($15,570) is looking back to his consistent best with several 100+ point games before last week’s 94-point outing. Last week was heavily impacted by the fact that the Saints placed a tagger in Neale’s back pocket for most of the night, but we can expect no such tactics against the Tigers. Richmond have historically given up points to midfeilders and 2023 has been no different with them conceding above league average to the position.
