We get a two-game slate in the AFL this Saturday as part of Round 14 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season. The day kicks with GWS hosting Fremantle at Giants Stadium and both sides will be looking to keep their slim top eight hopes alive. Then in the evening, we have a Melbourne-based team blockbuster with Richmond hosting St Kilda at the MCG. The Saints will look to continue to challenge for a top four spot, while the Tigers will attempt to keep their recent form going and vie for a finals spot.

Absolutely perfect conditions in Sydney for this Saturday’s match, and while there is a risk of showers during the game at the MCG, it shouldn’t be enough to heavily impact on that ground.

Where To Attack?

It has been a constant play all season, but certainly one to keep coming back to. Defenders against the Saints in 2023 has seen one of the biggest points leaks in recent memory with St Kilda conceding 78 points per game on average to each back. This is over 11 points per game above the league average, and the gap widens when you highlight the premium scorers with the top three back averaging 101 points per game.

Game Script – Richmond backs and midfielders

VALUE PLAYS

Nathan Fyfe ($9,680) / Matthew Johnson ($9,410) are both now features in the Dockers midfield. Fyfe has attended over 42% of the Dockers centre bounces in his last three games, while last week saw Johnson also attending over 40%. This resulted in both players notching up their highest scores of the season last week, with Fyfe posting an 83-point game and Johnson returning 93 points. While Jeager O'Meara is returning, I still expect both players to get consistent opportunity through the middle and both are still priced well enough at under $10k that they can return value in this role.

Toby Bedford ($9,970) is another player in a similar price range that has consistently shown the ability to return solid fantasy scores at this price point. From his last three games he has posted 73, 92 and 87 point games. He has been a tackle machine while also hitting the scoreboard and pushing up the ground.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Nick Vlastuin ($12,490) draws the best matchup in the league for his position as noted above with the Saints conceding over 11 points per game above league average to backs in 2023. In particular, it has been the key backs that have been racking up touches and Vlastuin is already a player in this role that has shown the ability to return huge fantasy scores as evidenced by the 117-point game last week. I will likely look to stack him up with a value Tigers defender for salary relief on a slate with few value options.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Luke Jackson ($14,020) will continue to be the number one ruck this week for the Dockers as Darcy remains out with injury. He delivered for us last week with a massive 119 fantasy points against the Tigers, which now means he has posted 103+ points in four of his last five games. 

Shai Bolton ($14,100) has been absolutely unleashed through the midfield this season with his centre bounce attendance up in the 60-70% range. This has resulted in huge upside with fantasy scoring, with a 103-point game, two 120+ point games and 130+ point game from his last six contests. At the $14k price point still, the upside of these returns will put you in contention for a large GPP contest, and this matchup against St Kilda is arguably the best in the league as they have given up the most points in 2023 to midfielders.
