Port Adelaide and Geelong will kick off Round 14 of the 2023 AFL season with a HUGE heavyweight clash between two premiership contenders. The Adelaide Oval will be pumping and we’re hoping for another cracking contest for our daily fantasy sweats!

The Power was certainly on last week against the Bulldogs in a big away win, but has that high-intensity match taken anything out of their legs? Meanwhile, Geelong are going to be well rested after the bye and ready to go here. A couple of stars are returning for the Cats with Dangerfield, Holmes and Duncan all named, which should bolster their midfield who have struggled to overcome injury woes throughout the season.

The Cats have the weapons up forward, but can they get them enough ball against this exciting young Power midfield?

The weather forecast is pretty clear for Adelaide so there shouldn’t be any concerns for your DFS team selections in this one!

Where To Attack?

Both Port Adelaide and Geelong are among the stingiest teams for AFL fantasy points conceded for the season. In particular, Port Adelaide concede the least points to opposition midfields in the entire competition while Geelong are right on the league average.

One area that Port have struggled this season is in the ruck, as they have conceded +14 points above league average to opposition ruckmen which is the worst in the competition. However be warned before diving into this stat too heavily. In the last two weeks, Scott Lycett has returned as a new man. He humbled Tim English last week who is arguably the best ruck in the competition at the moment, so I don’t think Jonathan Ceglar will hold any fears. Both do have a similar bustling style which might negate each other’s influence somewhat.

For the Cats, they have chopped and changed their backline all season which has resulted in leaking above average points to opposition forwards. Again, this trend might not hold true now that a few players have returned and things look more settled.

One point to note is the inclusions in the Geelong midfield. There’s a lot of unknowns there, and how you put the pieces together will make or break your fantasy teams. Dangerfield, Duncan and Holmes are all coming back which raises a lot of questions. Are they ready to go and how many minutes are they going to play in the midfield? It’s likely that Duncan slots into the half-back role left by Zach Touhy who has been omitted, however what happens to the CBA’s of the likes of Bruhn, Blicavs and Atkins? Something to think about.

VALUE PLAYS

Josh Sinn ($6,670) should get some more responsibility in his 4th AFL match with Lachie Jones out injured. He’s a promising young player, and although he hasn’t made much impact in his first two matches, and was subbed out last week, he might make the leap here at a budget price. There's not a lot of cheap value around if you want to pay up for the premiums!

Sam Powell-Pepper ($8,610) looks a good value pick tonight, compared to others around this price point, after a quieter game last week. Should be a favourable match up with most of his time played up forward, but he also doesn’t mind a contested contest which he should get here, with his physical style good for picking up some tackle points.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Travis Boak ($10,330) was very good last week against the Bulldogs with a tidy 88 fantasy points, and he seems to thrive when his team needs him most in these high-pressure contests. Boak’s best years are behind him but he’s still capable of pumping out a big score, as we saw with his 124 against St Kilda earlier in the year. Anything near that is a slate-winning score at his price.

Charlie Dixon ($10,810) has been very consistent this season with 6/8 games around the 80-point mark. If we trust the data, then this is a favourable match up for him up forward, but he also should get a fair chop out as the second ruck for Port. With multiple ways to score, he looks a good value option up forward.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Jeremy Cameron ($14,030) has had a sensational year with a 95-point average for the season. There’s a few question marks over the Cats midfield players as we mentioned above, so the one Cat who looks rock solid is Cameron. Virtually unstoppable at times, he’ll either rack up touches up the ground or kick a bag of goals. Would much rather save some pennies with the Cats mids and pay up for Cameron here.

Zak Butters ($16,130) has had an amazing month of football and might even be leading the Brownlow Medal count at this point of the season. He is relentless in his run, carry, dare and passion for the Sherrin. His last six games have netted fantasy scores of 121, 129, 101, 148, 118 and 111. At $16k he’s still very much in play if he hits those numbers! Will the Cats send O’Connor to shut him down? Good luck with that! I can’t see Butters having too many problems finding the football.

If you want to pivot, Connor Rozee ($15,720) hasn’t been far behind Butters with his AFL fantasy output. You’ll save a few hundred dollars and will probably have lower ownership.
