Marvel Stadium

As we enter the first bye round of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season, we are blessed with a monster four-game slate on Saturday.

The day kicks off with two very lop-sided matchups with the top team Collingwood travelling west to face the favourites for the wooden spoon in West Coast, while the second placed Port Adelaide will host the 16th placed Hawthorn. While I wouldn’t expect these games to be very competitive, they will likely be critical for daily fantasy players with two great stacking options available. The night time games should be more interesting contests with Gold Coast and Adelaide squaring off at TIO Stadium and the Western Bulldogs hosting Geelong at Marvel in what will be a key game for the final standings. on the AFL ladder.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

It is going to pick your poison through the midfield on this slate with three of the top five teams for points conceded to the position in 2023. But I wouldn’t look past attacking the Eagles who have given up the third most total points and the most points to premium players. These amounts have sky rocketed in the last five games as well with the Eagles in some of the worst form the club has ever seen.

AFL Data Tools

It's a similar tale up forward, and no surprise with West Coast sitting dead last on the ladder and giving up over 10 points per game above league average to opposition’s forwards. Things will not get any better on this slate as we noted in the intro above as they are facing the best team in the league. Stacking up the Collingwood forward line is obvious given they are massive 55 point favourites, but we can also shift to the Port Adelaide forwards are almost 6 goal favourites on Hawthorn.

Game Script – Collingwood midfielders and forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Todd Marshall ($9,290) - The two best matchups for key forwards in the league are both on this slate. Either attack the Eagles or the Hawks. The only challenge is that the Magpies don’t have too many key forwards that you can feel confident in. That said, rostering a Brody Mihocek, Mason Cox or Ash Johnson is more than fine in your stacks.

My first pick though is on the Port Adelaide side. Marshall has had an injury interrupted season, but has shown upside with an 88 point game earlier in the year and far bigger scores in past seasons. The alternative would be to spend up on Jeremy Finlayson in your Port stacks, or combine him and Marshall together.

Oisin Mullin ($6,780) is a nice point of difference value play. He didn’t set the world on fire in his debut but still managed a respectable 56 fantasy points at his price point.  He looked to have all the tools the get the ball across half back and the Cats liked to use him. This week he draws a solid matchup against the Bulldogs who have been giving up above average points to defenders in 2023.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Darcy Cameron ($11,430) draws an elite matchup this round against the Eagles who have given up the second most points overall to the position and the fifth most to the number one ruck. Sure you could target Port Adelaide, but the Hawks dual headed monster in the ruck makes that difficult. Cameron, since coming back from injury, has attended 67% and 77% of the Magpies centre bounces and we all saw last year the upside he has. Even better, he rests forward, and as we noted above, that is the best spot in the world for a tall to be resting when playing the Eagles.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Jordan De Goey ($15,100) has racked 120 points in two of his last three games and this week comes into one of the best matchups of the season. He will do whatever he likes through the midfield and his biggest scores typically come when he hits the scoreboard which almost seems like a certainty in game where the Magpies are favoured by 55 points.

Nick Daicos ($16,540) - Even the additional attention hasn't really slowed down this absolute gun. Posting 116 and 115 point fantasy points from his last three weeks, look for him to absolutely fill up in this matchup. From a fantasy perspective, the thing to love about Daicos is that doesn’t give up in a dead game. More than anything, he is forever chasing those additional possessions, both cheap and hard.
