Round 12 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season kicks off this Friday night with yet another critical game between two sides coming of a loss last week as Melbourne host Carlton at the MCG. The Demons are clinging to their spot in the top four, while Carlton are clinging to any remaining hope that they will turn their season around and meet their preseason expectations by finishing inside the top eight and playing finals in 2023.

Weather

Melbourne - Partly cloudy. 15 degrees.

Looks to be a cold evening with a few showers, but nothing that should signficinatly imapct the game or fantasy scoring.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

Both Melbourne and Carlton have conceded lower than league average fantasy points in 2023. The Blues do love to possess the football as shown by them sitting 3rd in the league for possessions and 5th for uncontested possessions. Melbourne also rack up the possessions but they play a much more contested style.

AFL Data Tools

The one area where this game script lines up to attack is stacking up the Blues defenders against Melbourne. The Demons continue to concede points to backs this year giving up over 1 point per game above league average and 89 points per game to the opponent's top three scorers at the position. As noted above, Carlton have been no stranger to racking up uncontested possessions this year across the back line.

Game Script – Carlton backs, Melbourne inside midfielders and forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Brodie Kemp ($9,020) should be well suited to this matchup as I expect the Blues backs to rack up the uncontested possessions with the Demons structuring up behind the ball. Through three games this year Kemp has scores of 107, 46 and 79, two of these would be sufficient value to be in contention in large tournaments at this price point on a tough single game slate. Stack him up with other well priced Blues backs or even link him with Sam Docherty as the premium option if you can find the value elsewhere.

Kade Chandler ($8,390)… I expect the Demons to win this game with the market having them as over 16 point favourites, and as a result I will be looking to their forward line when rostering. Chandler has displayed significant upside this season with two scores of 100+ and through the early part of the year was consistently scoring in the 60-point range.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Tom Sparrow ($10,990) is an absolute lock for me on this slate. He has always showed significant promise as a future midfielder for Melbourne but their star studded line-up has always kept him to roles on the outside. With Clayton Oliver out injured, Sparrow if finally getting his opportunity. Last week he attended the most centre bounces of their entire team and as a result racked up 18 disposals, 6 tackles and a goal on his way to 92 fantasy points.

AFL Data Tools

Matthew Kennedy ($11,970) was somewhat of a spruik in the daily fantasy circles last week but let everyone down. As a result, I love going to him this week at what could be a nice point of difference and lowish ownership on a single game slate. Although he attended no centre bounces last week, the Blues have seen both Hewett and Curnow come out of the line-up who combined for just under 60% in total. Kennedy was also given a role across half back at times, which should be favourable to his fantasy scoring in this matchup against Melbourne.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Christian Petracca ($16,040) really took over the reigns last week with Oliver out of the lineup. Playing less forward and a predominant midfield role (his first game all season where his centre bounce attendances were above the 80% mark), we saw what he is capable of fantasy wise racking up 116 fantasy points. He is by far my favourite premium roster on this slate.
