Round 10 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season kicks off an absolute block buster Friday night game between two top four sides. The second-placed Melbourne will travel to Adelaide Oval and take on the fourth placed Port Adelaide. Both sides are 7-2 through nine rounds and have premiership dreams in 2023.

Weather

Adelaide - Partly cloudy, chance of showers. 17 degrees.

Any of the minimal showers that may occur in Adelaide this Friday should be well and truly passed by the time the first bounce comes around so I wouldn’t expect weather conditions to impact the fantasy scores in this matchup.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data Tools

There is almost no area of this game that stands out to target as both Melbourne and Port Adelaide are bottom four in the league in 2023 for fantasy points conceded. That said, the way that Melbourne sets up with an extra behind the ball continues to force their opponents to possess the ball through the back line. Continuing a trend from last year, they are still giving up over a 1 point above league average to defenders in 2023.

AFL Data Tools

Port Adelaide have been absolutely dominated in the ruck this season. They are giving up 106 points per game to their opposition’s number one ruckman, which is over 22 points per game above league average. This week they will bring back Scott Lycett in attempt to sure things up at the position, however it has not mattered who played in the role this year, and he will have his work cut out for him against the Demons two-headed monster!

Game Script – Port Adelaide backs, Melbourne inside midfielders

VALUE PLAYS

Dylan Williams ($8,870) / Kane Farrell ($8,830) This slate is incredibly tough to find value plays and the premium plays are some of the most obvious and safe plays to roster as can be typical on a single-game slate featuring Melbourne. As a result I will be looking to roster value Port Adelaide backs. As noted above, Melbourne have consistently given up above league average points to defenders this season and in the past, and Port Adelaide still like to rack up the uncontested ball at times.

Dylan Williams has been in solid form out of the back line in recent weeks averaging 73 points per game over the last three games, including a 92-point game. Meanwhile Kane Farrell has flashed upside in the past. You can either stack these two up together in the same roster or look to link one of them to a more expensive Port Adelaide back such as Dan Houston (very difficult on this slate, but would likely be a unique option because of that).

MID PRICED PLAYS

Jack Viney ($13,860) offers a nice step down in price point from the two premium Melbourne midfielders on this slate. He should also take advantage of the fact that Port Adelaide give up the 4th most contested possessions in the league. Viney has posted 3 games of 109 or higher from his last five matches and looks to be solid form.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Max Gawn ($15,090) draws the best matchup in the league at the ruck against Port Adelaide. As noted above, the Power are giving up 106 points per game to the opponent's number one ruckman and while Melbourne have been sharing time between Gawn and Grundy, I still expect Gawn to take advantage in this elite matchup. He has already shown ability to hit tournament-winning upside in this current ruck setup posting a season high 113 earlier this year.

Zak Butters ($14,460) is seeing 60-70% of the centre bounces now for Port Adelaide, which has been a significant increase from the first three weeks of the season. As a result his fantasy scoring has seen a solid increase, posting three scores of 110+ from his last 5 games.
