Weather
Melbourne - Cloudy, chance of showers, 15 degrees.
Brisbane - Sunny, 25 degrees.
Watch out for potential rain during the game in Melbourne tomorrow afternoon, although with only up to 1mm forecast it shouldn’t impact the MCG at all. Brisbane looks like a corker with nothing more than a bit of humidity making things slippery.
Where To Attack?
With Saints on this slate there is always going to one very obvious avenue to target, and with this being a two-game finals slate this tactic stands out even more. All season the Saints have conceded a large number of outside uncontested marks and possessions, especially across half-back where they have given up the most points in the league. Stacking up the Giants backs and midfielders is an elite play on this slate and you can expect them to be highly-owned across the field.
Game Script – GWS backs and midfielders
VALUE PLAYS
Sam Taylor ($8,590)… on a finals slate with next-to-no obvious value, milking the leak of backs against the Saints has to be leveraged with value players. Sam Taylor fits the mould as a key back who has upside of 90+ points at an $8k price range. I will be linking him up with other GWS defenders and expect the Giants to rack up the ball across half back against a side that has given up over 10 points per game above league average to the position this season.
Miles Bergman ($8,230)… once again we are grasping at straws in this price range, but Miles Bergman has been freed up from playing a key position defensive role in recent weeks to roaming half back and playing up on the wing as well. As a result this screams a decent opportunity to take advantage of his low price point on a player that has shown 90-100 point upside across his career in the right role.
MID PRICED PLAYS
Oscar McInerney ($13,480) has an elite matchup in the ruck on this slate, and is almost who we are left with as part of a process of elimination. Port Adelaide have given up the most points in the league to the opposition number one ruckman this season at 96 points per game. Now it has to be mentioned that they have brought back Scott Lycett for this final, however unless he has played a semi-tagging role on his opponent, that has done little to prevent the fantasy scoring, and we know they will sub Lycett late and go with Finlayson as the sole ruck.
Therefore we are left with paying up for Rowan Marshall ($17k in a final is too big for me), rostering Kieran Briggs against Marshall who has been rather stingy this season, or going with the old seasoned veteran in a home final in what has been the easiest matchup in the league this season. Let’s go Big O!
PREMIUM PLAYS
Stephen Coniglio ($15,140)… attacking that St Kilda midfield is a must on this slate as noted above. There is a clear choice of paying right up for Tom Green or stepping down to Coniglio for salary relief. Both players are seeing the most consistent level of midfield time and, more often than not, I think we will need the savings Coniglio brings. Expect the Giants to go with a more experienced midfield in the finals and Coniglio has been there several times in his career.
Jack Steele ($14,560) has had a miserable season and remains under an injury cloud, but that hasn’t stopped him from flashing that massive upside of previous years as one of the best fantasy players in the game. Posting upside scores of 115, 116 and 133 in his last six games indicates he can still go when he needs to, and with two weeks off to freshen off and playing in his first ever final, I think he will summon everything for this game and at a relatively friendly price point for his upside.
