AFL

We are back at the MCG this Friday for Week 2 of the 2023 AFL Finals Series and once again it will a full house as Melbourne host Carlton in the first Semi Final.  Melbourne will look to rebound after they squandered their chance to go straight to the Preliminary Final last week with inaccurate kicking. Meanwhile, Carlton will look to continue their magical run after winning 10 of their last 11 games and eliminating last years grand finalists, the Sydney Swans, last week.

Melbourne - Mostly sunny, 23 degrees.

Absolutely perfect weather this Friday night in Melbourne for this mega finals matchup! Let’s play some fantasy.

Where To Attack?

AFL Data

Similar to last week we will be going back to targeting backs against the Demons. Melbourne have given up over 2.5 points per game above league averaging this season to opposition defenders as they typically structure up behind the ball. Carlton will be well suited to take advantage of this as they have been one of the highest possession teams in the competition in 2023.

Game Script – Carlton backs, Melbourne forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Alex Cincotta ($6,880) stands out as a value option on this slate with Demons giving up above average fantasy points to defenders this season. I will be stacking up Blues backs with Carlton being one of the highest possession and uncontested possession teams in the league this year. Utilising Cincotta or another value back such as Caleb Marchbank will give salary relief to spend up at other positions.

James Jordon ($8,210) is another obvious value play given he is likely to play on the wing and potentially see some inside midfield opportunity with Angus Brayshaw out. Jordon has shown upside this season for this price point with a 97-point game earlier in the year and back to back games of 77 and 79 points in July.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Tom Sparrow ($10,650) will be the first in line to assume inside midfield opportunities with Angus Brayshaw being out for the game. Last week he attended 45% of the Demons centre bounces. With a final matchup like this finding value opportunities are few and far between so capitalising on additional fantasy scoring opportunities will be critical.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Clayton Oliver ($16,980) is built for finals football. As a contested bull, he thrives when the heat is turned up and last week was no different dropping a ridiculous 132 fantasy points on the back of 31 possessions and 10 tackles. This week should be no different. While both sides have been difficult to score against for midfielders this year, Oliver will stand above as the best inside player in the matchup.

Max Gawn ($15,220) delivered for us last week posting a massive 126 points as the sole ruck against one of the more difficult ruck duos in the league to score against. This week he faces Carlton who have given up 87 points per game to opposition number one ruckman this season, which is over 2 points per game above league average. This is a lock and load play given Carlton are playing both Marc Pittonet and Tom De Koning.
