AFL Fantasy

We are back at the MCG this Friday, kicking off Preliminary Finals weekend for the 2023 AFL Finals Series.  After being the top side all season, Collingwood will host the form team of the competition, GWS Giants, at the MCG with a spot in the Grand Final on the line. Can the Giants continue their blistering form for another week or will the Magpies live up the expectations they have created all season and make it to the final Saturday in September?

We are set for a classic!

Weather

Melbourne - Mostly sunny, 16 degrees.

Absolutely perfect weather this Friday night in Melbourne for this mega finals matchup! Let’s play some fantasy.

Where To Attack?

GWS and Collingwood are both bottom six for fantasy points conceded this season, which is no surprise when you get to this time of the season. There are no stand out areas to target, but it should be noted that the Giants are one of the highest possession teams in the league. As a result there is a real chance that win, lose or draw they still win the fantasy battle. I would be looking to roster them across half back and through the midfield.

Game Script – GWS backs, Collingwood forwards

VALUE PLAYS

Will Hoskin-Elliott ($9,660) has seen a role switch in recent weeks moving across half back and along the wing. With Nick Daicos coming back into the side there is potential for this role to change, depending on where they play Daicos in his first game back, however with Taylor Adams out it is likely they will need Daicos through the midfield. Through the last two games, Hoskin-Elliott has gone over the 90-point mark which is right around 10x with his current salary.

Brody Mihocek ($8,940) has been in as good of form we have seen from him in his career over the last four games. He has posted four straight scores of 81, 73, 89 and 77. In a big final like this at his price point, that is a huge return and as noted above, the Magpies are favourites in this matchup and the Giants are not loaded with key backs after you get past Sam Taylor who will likely be used elsewhere.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Jordan De Goey ($13,150) stands out as a huge upside play at the $13k price point. He has consistently been at the top of Collingwood’s centre bounces this year while other players rotate through and he notched up a massive 120 fantasy points against the Giants earlier this season. His scores have been mediocre recently, which means his ownership will likely be down in this matchup. Another Magpies in a similar price range that I would consider as point of difference is Josh Daicos, who will likely be very low owned for a single game slate, but can also hit a high ceiling game.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Lachie Whitfield ($14,980) is in elite form at the moment posting a low score of 99 from his last four matches and hitting 119+ in two of his last three games. As noted above, the Giants are one of the highest possession teams in the league and win, lose or draw, you can expect their backs to collect plenty of touches. As a result, Whitfield becomes one of the better options at the premium price and also offers an opportunity to stack up with another Giants defender.

Stephen Coniglio ($15,600)the Giants are essentially running with a three-man midfield unit at the moment with Green, Coniglio and Ward dominating their centre bounces. This is in comparison to the Magpies who share the roles around quite significantly. That and the fact that GWS love to possess the football, means my preference for spending up through the middle is with the Giants. Coniglio is coming off a 119-point game last week against the Power and has topped the 100-point mark in his last three games.
