The final day of the 2022 AFL home and away season is here, and what a season it has been! Today the final makeup of the top eight will be decided, all three games influencing the final finishing positions.

The Hawks will be looking to prevent the Western Bulldogs from being a chance of making the finals as they kick off the day in Launceston. Old foes Carlton and Collingwood will play off in the match of the round at the MCG with implications for both teams, before Sydney need to put together a strong performance in their quest for a home qualifying final opportunity as they face St Kilda at Marvel Stadium.

There is a small amount of rain forecast for Launceston on Sunday, however it is predicted for the evening. Clear skies are forecast for Melbourne, and it’s always dry under the roof at Marvel Stadium!

Where to Attack?

Let's take a closer look at our AFL Data Tools to find any trends that might help us construct winning lineups on Draftstars for this match.

The Western Bulldogs and St Kilda have been renowned for conceding points to defenders this year, the Bulldogs topping that list over the last five rounds (as shown by the DFR ‘Points Against’ tool). It is expected that Hawthorn will lose the midfield battle on Sunday, so their backs will have plenty of work to do.

Collingwood has been the team to target with midfielders in recent weeks, the Magpies conceding an average of 92 points to opposition onballers in the last five weeks. Collingwood head into this game with similar midfield personnel, so there is no indication that the trend will change this week.

Game Script – Hawthorn backs, Carlton midfielders

Value Play

Finlay Macrae ($6,000)

Macrae has barely been sighted at AFL level this year, appearing just once, however he has been dominating in the second tier with recent scores of 160, 143 and 120. The youngsters role is slightly unknown this week, but he is worth the risk at bargain basement price.

Mid-Priced Plays

Tom Hickey ($9,920)

Sydney’s ruckman has had a fantastic month, scoring 88+ fantasy points on three occasions. He gets a positive matchup against St Kilda this week and should have a solid floor rucking solo at Marvel Stadium. It’s worth noting that earlier in the season Hickey put up a 90 against the Saints.

Blake Hardwick ($10,420)

Hardwick has been one of Hawthorn’s main distributors from the backline this season, using his experience to guide the young Hawks. The Western Bulldogs are a great matchup for opposition backs and Hardwick should take plenty of kick ins if the James Sicily midfield experiment continues. He has also gone under 78 just once in six matches, great form at this price.

Premium Plays

Patrick Cripps ($14,750)

Cripps has put the Carlton midfield on his shoulders since Kennedy and Hewett went down injured, scoring over 118 three times in the last month. While Cripps hasn’t monstered the Magpies in recent history, he will be fired up to perform and send his team into the finals.

Josh Dunkley ($15,260)

Hawthorn have conceded the most disposals overall to opposition teams this year, including the most contested possessions. The Bulldogs midfield should therefore thrive, but who do we back to score big? I’m going with Dunkley. A star in his own right, Dunkley has missed the fantasy ton just four times this year and can go 130+.
