Sydney vs Geeolong at SCG (SYD -2.5, 146.5)

Weather

Rain is on the radar for Sydney today, so we may not see a free flowing game like we witnessed at Marvel Stadium last night.

Where to Attack?

Obviously each season is a new year and trends from 2021 aren’t typically going to remain the same. With that said, with just the one round under the belt so far it is still a great starting point to gauge what we can expect heading into this round of games.

Geelong give up a lot of possession to the defensive unit of their opposition given their structure and setup. Whilst it is clearly an effective set-up and gameplan for Chris Scott, it does allow for big fantasy scores through the opposition backline, which may be worth considering in this single-game slate that is lacking depth down back.

Whilst not as strong as the backline data, the Swans give up greater scores through the ruck position than most teams, including the Cats. With salary at a premium in this slate and Tom Hickey commanding the top salary, it may be best to look elsewhere to save some cash for premium player scoring with a higher ceiling.

Game Script - Sydney backs, Geelong rucks

VALUE PLAYS

Max Holmes ($7,290)

Produced a serviceable 70 points last week against the Bombers, kicking 2 goals from 16 possessions. Attended a handful of centre bounces, however found the ball all across the ground, and should enjoy the SCG surrounds. Mitch Duncan returning may cause him to take a slight hit, however looks a solid player to save salary elsewhere in this slate.

Nick Blakey ($9640)

It was a strong start for Blakey in his new defensive role for the year, scoring 81 points against the Giants. There is room for improvement in that score with only 1 tackle, however I am looking for Swans to continue to look for Blakey on their way out of D50. It was a slow start from Blakey last week, however 20 disposals through the final three quarters, with the data highlighting Sydney backs, this looks to be a solid addition to a team.

MID-PRICE PLAY

Brandon Parfitt ($10,320)

It looks as though the Cats are starting to trust Parfitt more with the midfield load if his performance last week is any indication. Of the 35 centre bounces for the game, Parfitt attended 30 of them on his way to a score of 92 points. There is room for improvement in that score too with a limited output last week in regards to marks, tackles and scoreboard impact.

Isaac Heeney ($12,930)

Like Parfitt, Heeney also found his way into more midfield time last week. With the Swans playing Josh Kennedy out of the backline, it was the likes of Heeney and James Rowbottom who saw an increase in their time through the middle. In the past Heeney's output has largely depended on scoreboard impact.
25 disposals and 6 tackles against GWS shows the potential versatility here as a forward selection.

PREMIUM PLAY

Jake Lloyd ($13,990)

With some solid midfield selections at lower salaries, it might pay off to buy up in the defensive stocks tonight. Lloyd returns after missing round 1 with COVID protocols, and there is no reason to suggest he doesn't pick up where he left things in 2021. 17 of his last 19 scores are north of 90, with 12 of those triple figures.
