Absolute corkers all across Australia tomorrow. Plenty of heat but no adverse weather conditions to impact our fantasy teams. Let’s play!

Where to Attack?

Hawthorn gave up the second most points to backs last week and the most to the top three scorers, which is no surprise given their form against defenders in recent years. The other side that we consistently see giving up points to backs in Collingwood, and in round 1 they continued the trend conceding the fourth most points to the position.

It may seem surprising that Melbourne have given up the most points to midfielders in round 1 and it could be easy to mark down to small sample size. However, as we mentioned last week when previewing the Western Bulldogs vs Melbourne grand final rematch, the Demons conceded one of the highest amounts of points to the position in 2021 as well. The way they structure up opens up the opportunity for midfielders and this trend will likely continue this year. Attacking them with Gold Coast midfielders could be an under owned play on this slate.

Game Script – Port Adelaide Backs, Gold Coast Midfielders

VALUE PLAYS

Jai Newcombe ($8,700) is still too cheap again this week with his role on the inside. In Round 1 he attended 13 centre bounces and worked his way to 79 fantasy points. This week will be a harder matchup as the Hawks travel to Adelaide to play the Power, however the positive is that Newcombe only managed 3 tackles last week, which is usually his calling card. I expect that number increase significantly this round and him to pay off this low salary.

Mitchell Hinge ($6,460) was a bit of a spruik at a minimum price range in round one and didn’t quite deliver. I see no reason to go away from him after one performance this week, getting opportunity on the wing at $6k in what should a fantasy friendly matchup against the Magpies at low ownership.

MID-PRICED PLAYS

Matt Rowell ($11,750) will be one of the highest owned plays on this slate. His price has barely risen since round one where he proved to everyone he was physically back to the form that generated so much hype and excitement his rookie season. Stationed permanently in the middle he attended 27 centre bounces and dominated the inside contest posting 117 points. In theory this will be a more difficult game this week, but as we noted at the top Melbourne have a trend of conceding points to midfielders. Lock and load!

Zak Butters ($11,730)… well the Draftstars pricing model has blown up again. Zak Butters posted a 96-point game in round one and amazingly has seen a price drop since this week. Butters looked at home in his new role through the midfield attending 14 centre bounces and I expect him to average 95+ points per game this season and this will be the last week you can get him at a sub $14k price point.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Lachie Neale ($15,530) looked to be all the way back to his top form last week and if you followed us in he rewarded you 118 points. His price has jumped slightly, but at his best he is a $18k plus player and I love this matchup vs Essendon at home. There has been a slight shift in the Lions midfield this year as they rotate more of the youngsters through, however Neale appears to be a mainstay despite these changes with a team high 21 centre bounce attendances.
