Western Bulldogs vs Geelong at MARVEL Stadium (WB -3.5, 168.5)

Weather

No need to consider the weather for this being held at Marvel. Lets play some fantasy!

Where to Attack?

Firstly one area that stands out is the Western Bulldogs concede the fewest fantasy points in the league to midfielders this season. This is a strong trend that we saw last year as well, with the Bulldogs having arguably the best midfield group in the league and love to dominate the possession game through this part of the field. As you can see above Geelong on the flipside have allowed high numbers of disposals, particularly uncontested possessions this year.

The Western Bulldogs have continued their trend this season of conceding points to defenders. Their structure is typically to cut off attack through the middle of the ground while allowing teams to switch play across halfback, which results in points for defenders. Interestingly it has typically been the value players that have scored well against the Dogs this year in the back line.

This stat jumped out as incredibly surprising to me. Geelong stand out conceding the third most points to forwards this season, despite the fact they are sitting 6th on the ladder and have given up the 5th fewest goals. They are surrounded in the top 4 points conceded to forwards by teams sitting last, second last and third last in that order, so you can see they are quite the outlier. This indicates that I wouldn’t necessarily be looking for players who will kick a bag, but rather those that may accumulate stats as a forward.

Game Script – Western Bulldogs midfielders and forwards, Geelong backs

VALUE PLAYS

Sam De Koning ($6,670) has been collecting plenty of uncontested possessions and marks across the back line in recent weeks, despite this his price still remains in the $6k range. From three of his last four games he has passed the 62 point mark, which is just under 10x for this price point and this included an 83 point game last week. As noted above the Bulldogs allow the uncontested play in the back line and it is typically the low value players who exceed their averages. I will be looking to stack up the Cats defenders, particularly those in the lower price range like De Koning.

Anthony Scott ($6,570) has been consistent for the Bulldogs in recent weeks with scores of 59, 55 and 57 from his last three matches. While this isn’t mind blowing, on a single game slate if you lock a score over 55 points in at this price point it allows you to spend up on the numbers high value players on offer on this slate. Furthermore, Scott playing across the forward line will have one of the better matchups in the league vs the Cats.

Cooper Stephens ($6,000) let everyone down last week, but still appears to be one of the safer value options on this slate. He still managed 49 points last week, which wouldn’t kill you at minimum price on a single game slate and it is looking like it is probably his floor result given he is getting a limited role through the midfield.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Tim English ($13,480) has been absolutely dominant from a fantasy perspective this season. He is yet to go under 105 fantasy points from his five games played this season and will once again resume the role as sole ruckman after Jordan Sweet was dropped this week. I love the matchup for him against Blicavs and Stanley who will split time in there (impacting their fantasy scores) and this pairing has never historically been a very formidable matchup.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Bailey Smith ($16,130) returns this week as one of the highest fantasy scoring players in the league this season, with an average of 118 points. The Bulldogs should win the midfield value and I love paying up for a couple of them given the huge number of players value players available in the $6k price range.

Jack Macrae ($15,090) will be another target, as I stack up the Bulldogs midfield with the expectation that they will not allow the Cats much opportunity. As noted above the Bulldogs have conceded the fewest points in the league to opposition midfielders this year, a trend that continues year in and year out with their current setup. Macrae is one of the players you can rely on to get a consistent role through the midfield as Bev juggles his wide number of options he has through that position.
