And then there were four. Sydney and Collingwood will both be gunning for a place in the 2022 AFL Grand Final when they clash in a Preliminary Final at the SCG on Saturday, in what is sure to be a high-octane affair.

The Swans are arguably the form side of the competition and head into this one as favourites, however the Magpies have shown time and time again that they have the mentality and system to go all the way.

Draftstars have put up a whopping $100k in the main contest, so let’s crack into some fantasy!

Where to Attack?

The intensity and unpredictability of finals football renders DFS strategy even more important. There are a couple of prime avenues to attack here, so let’s call on the Daily Fantasy Rankings Data Tools to assist our selections!

The DFR ‘Points Against’ tool shows that Sydney are the hardest team to score fantasy points against in the competition. The team in red and white have been stingy all season, but particularly in the last couple of months as their form has peaked. As such, expect Sydney stacks to be a popular play on this slate, especially considering the Swans are favourites.

Another obvious trend that presents itself here is Collingwood’s leakiness to midfielders. The Magpies have struggled to contain inside ball winners all year, and the pattern was on display again last week as Freo midfielders racked it up despite being on the losing side – Andrew Brayshaw (127), Caleb Serong (118) and Blake Acres (110) were the top three fantasy scorers on the ground.

Both these teams have given up big scores to opposition rucks in 2022. The absence of Brodie Grundy has left Collingwood vulnerable at times, despite the best efforts of Darcy Cameron/Mason Cox, while Sydney have shared the load and therefore struggled to achieve consistency in the ruck department.

Game Script – Sydney stacks

VALUE PLAY

Trent Bianco ($7,200)

Value is hard to find on this slate, so it appears likely that many will infuse some Trent Bianco into their Sydney stacks. Bianco made a few mistakes last week in the heat of battle, but still produced a DFS score of 56 at just over $6k. Despite copping a price hike this week, I still think he can go close to value this weekend.

MID-PRICE PLAYS

Tom Hickey ($10,180)

As previously mentioned, Hickey gets a great matchup against the leaky Magpies ruck division here. He has scored 80+ in three of his last four games (including a 105 against North Melbourne and 88 against Collingwood) and, after putting Max Gawn to the sword last week, it is clear that big Tom is up to the rigours of finals footy.

Dylan Stephens ($9,890)

Highly touted youngster Dylan Stephens has performed very well since breaking into the Sydney side, consistently putting up 70+ fantasy scores. He should get a bump this week coming up against the Magpies and has produced better numbers at the SCG than anywhere else over the course of the season, hitting ceiling scores of 89 and 108 at the venue. The only question that remains is how do you fit him into a team when there are so many other appealing midfield options?

PREMIUM PLAY

Luke Parker (15,250)

Battle hardened midfielder Luke Parker is just made for September football. The contested beast scored 120 against Melbourne in Sydney’s first final and managed the same score against Collingwood just a few weeks earlier. At $15k, it’s nearly impossible to say no when Parker could be the top scorer on the slate.

Callum Mills ($16,410)

The same can be said for Callum Mills. Despite dealing with opposition attention often throughout 2022, Mills has flourished to average 111 fantasy points as a full-time midfielder. Hardly a one-trick pony, the fully fledged star can score through a variety of avenues – he is an aggressive tackler, takes marks around the ground and can hit the scoreboard. He scored 129 against Collingwood at the SCG late in the season and always has the potential to break a slate.
