Where to Attack

 

 

Fremantle have taken over the top spot for points conceded to defenders this season. They give up 71 points per player, which is over 3.5 points per game above the league average and when you isolate the top three scoring players at the position are conceding a massive 92 points per game. Adelaide is also in the top four for points conceded.

 

 

Gold Coast continue to be one of the top teams in the league to attack with midfielders, conceding the third most points in the league this season. This number has reduced over the last five games but playing down at an unfamiliar ground I expect them to get carved up by a rampaging Essendon who are chasing a finals berth.

 

 

This is a great slate for forwards with Gold Coast giving up the second most points in the league and Adelaide conceding the third most. Targeting the Crows is made even better in this matchup as Melbourne are over 40-point favourites, which means their forwards will be getting plenty of opportunity.

VALUE PLAYS

Kieran Strachan (DS $5,000) is taking the number one ruck position for the Crows on this slate after Reilly O’Brien went down injured last week. He draws pretty much the worst matchup in the league for the position against Max Gawn (and Luke Jackson giving the chop out), however at the minimum price it is hard not to play a number one ruck. Fifty points should be about the floor for this role and that means a 10x return (plus you can play him as a forward).

Luke Foley (DS $6,290) will be lining up in the Eagles back line this week that is without its number one kicker in Shannon Hurn. This means there will plenty of available possessions that need to be soaked up by the rest of the Eagles. Foley has already shown massive upside for his price posting 90 fantasy points in his second full AFL game this season. I love stacking him up with other Eagles backs as Fremantle give up the most points in the league to the position.

Matt Rowell (DS $7,820) let everyone down last week posting a 49-point performance after back to back 70+ point games. He certainly hasn’t shown the brilliance we saw pre injury in his return this year, however there are still flashes of his contested work in quarters and playing at GMHBA will suit him significantly. His skill set now is contested football and tackling, but he struggles to get to the contests and out on the spread. The size and shape of this ground really caters for those types of players, so I love backing up on Rowell again this week at a cheap price and hopefully lower ownership after everyone was burned last week.

Connor Blakely (DS $5,000) rounds out the significant amount of value options available on this slate. Basically, everything we said about Blakely last week applies again as his price has not yet budged from the minimum. Last week he posted a 56 point game, backing up his 65 from the week before. He didn’t attend any centre bounces, but without Brayshaw and Fyfe in the line-up there should be plenty of opportunity this week and has always had nose to find the football.

 

PREMIUM PLAYS

 

Max Gawn (DS $15,390) draws the second gamer as we mentioned in the value plays, and this is the first time he will ever play as the sole ruckman. This should be child’s play for the experienced Gawn and with all the value available on this slate I am very happy to spend right up in the ruck position.

 

Adam Cerra (DS $13,390) is starting to develop into a fantasy pig as his opportunity continues to grow with the Dockers now down Nathan Fyfe and Andrew Brayshaw. His last three games have been 129, 138 and 98, and on this slate, he draws a matchup against the Eagles who have been down on form and give up the fifth most fantasy points in the league to the position.

 

Alex Witherden (DS $13,480) will slot right into the Hurn role as we saw earlier in the season. The Eagles love utilising his foot skills out of the backline in a similar manner to the captain, and we can expect him to also take the bulk of the kick ins. We have seen his upside in similar situations earlier in the year where he posted two games of 120+. To make this matchup even better he draws Fremantle who have given up the most points in the league to the position.
