WEATHER WATCH

Melbourne / Ballarat

Brisbane / Gold Coast

Hobart

The games in Queensland both look to be in perfectly warm conditions while Melbourne and Hobart are facing windy/rainy conditions. I would monitor the conditions closer to game time, but consider the fact that there might be thunderstorms during the Collingwood vs West Coast game at the MCG.

Where to Attack

Western Bulldogs have become one of the top teams in the league to target via the backline this season. Giving up the second most points in the league to the position, this number has ballooned in recent weeks giving up 71 points per player, and 91 points per player when you isolate the top three scorers.

Collingwood is the other team on this slate to target through the defense, and the Eagles love to build up their play from back line. The MCG provides ample space for the kick mark game, but just beware of the weather as mentioned above.

Gold Coast have been cut up through the midfield for another season in 2021 giving up 87 points per player (most in the league). This number has started edging down in recent weeks, and in particularly when you look at the numbers for the top three scorers they have held the opposition to just 101 points per player (which is close to the lowest in the league for that period). As a result the Melbourne premium midfielders may not be the lock you would think off first glance.

Funnily enough, Melbourne have given up a lot of points through the midfield this year. Despite their great win loss record they are conceding the fourth most points to the position, and this number is far higher over the past five rounds.

This is a dream matchup for Max Gawn with the Suns giving up 91 points per game to the opponent’s number one ruck this year (the most in the league). If you are worried about Gawn’s ceiling being limited by Luke Jackson, then Reilly O’Brien is another alternative as Tim English and the Bulldogs have given up around the same number of points as the Suns.

VALUE PLAYS

Nick Blakey (DS $7,210) as we all know has made the move to the half back line, and like every move to the half back line it is been a big benefit for his fantasy scoring. From his last four games he has posted two games of 77+ and his lowest score has been 65 points (last week), which was injury interrupted.

Finlay Macrae (DS $5,000) is getting his first real opportunity on the inside midfield attending over 50% of the centre bounces last week result in his highest fantasy score of the season in 71 points. Given his price has yet to move away from the absolute minimum I will going right back to him for the value.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Andrew Gaff (DS $13,830) has been a shadow of his old self this year, especially from a fantasy perspective. But we all know he still has the upside in the right matchup (season high of 154) and he is in solid form in recent weeks with back to back scores of 113+. The matchup against the Magpies screams to play Gaff at this price as Collingwood give up the most uncontested marks in the league this season, and are in the top few for uncontested disposals, both of which are Gaff’s bread and butter.

Luke Davies-Uniacke (DS $11,890) is a sneaky low ownership play on this slate with Ben Cunnington and Tarryn Thomas out. LDU should pick up all the midfield time there is. We are still yet to see that upside game from Luke, but you know it is coming and with a game down at Bellerive and a few midfielders out this could be the break out game we have been waiting for.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Max Gawn (DS $15,270) has an elite matchup on this slate against Chris Burgess and Zac Smith for the Suns. An noted above they have given up 91 points per game to the oppositions number one ruckman this year, which is the most in the league. Gawn has not been as consistent lately as he continues to share some of his ruck duties with youngster Luke Jackson (approx. 70%/30% split of CBA’s), but he still has a huge ceiling and this is the matchup you can expect him to hit on.

Clayton Oliver (DS $15,490) remains in a decent price range, not yet reaching to top bracket of $16k+. After a bit of a mid season slump he has rebounded with back to back 126 point games. As noted above he has the second best matchup in the league for his position against the Gold Coast who give up 111 points per game to the top three scoring midfielders.
