Where to Attack

Obviously, each season is a new year and trends from 2019 aren’t typically going to remain the same, that said it is still a great starting point to gauge what we can expect heading into this contest.

Hawthorn and St Kilda were both great teams to target with defenders in 2019. The Hawks gave up the most fantasy points in the league to the position last year, including 92 points per game to the top three scorers. This is a trend that we have seen in recent years as Alastair Clarkson likes to set up to allow the chip kick deep in his opponents own defense. It typically results in higher than projected scores for key defenders.

It will be a decision we need to arrive at early on in the season as to whether 2019 was a true reflection of Melbourne. They were, surprisingly, one of the leakiest teams in the league to midfielders last year and we will need to make a call as to whether this was the blip, or 2018 was the blip. On this slate I will certainly be looking to target them in a game against West Coast in WA.

Ruck is going to be a very difficult choice on this slate with three of the four teams who gave up the fewest points out of the number one ruck in 2019 are playing. Furthermore, West Coast will be a difficult beast with Nic Naitanui back playing. The North Melbourne vs St Kilda matchup stands out as the best game to play ruckman from.

VALUE PLAYS

Harris Andrews (DS $6,990, MB $4,100) is my super sneaky play on this slate. At his price point he has shown capability of totally busting a slate open with a 100-point ceiling. However, I am looking at him as being low owned and in the best matchup for his position in the league. The last 3 times Andrews has played against the Hawks his lowest score has been 72 fantasy points, which is more than enough to realise at his price point.

Brandon Starcevich (DS $6,000, MB $3,500) should get some run on the wing, a position that he started in 11 times during the Marsh Series. At his price point and with a role through the wings he should easily pay off the near minimum salary.

MID PRICED PLAYS

Jy Simpkin (DS $9,980, MB $6,300) is a role change as he is expected to move directly into the mid field with the Roos as they continue their development and plan for the future. Simpkin displayed a GPP winning ceiling last year while getting a run through the middle, posting a 119-point game. Through two preseason games he averaged 14.5 center bounce attendances and returned an average of 75.5 fantasy points.

Tim Membrey (DS $10,690, MB $7,800) is purely a positional adjustment play due to the arrival and emergence of Max King. This is expected to let Membrey foam up the ground, providing significant run through the wings. We already got a glimpse of this in the preseason where Members went absolutely ballistic with 24 touches, 4 goals and 138 fantasy points in game one, followed up by 86 points in game two.

PREMIUM PLAYS

Elliot Yeo (DS $14,290, MB $8,900) has hit the season in arguably the best condition of his life and it showed during the Marsh series where he played predominantly midfield and returned 124 fantasy points from his single game. When it comes to the Eagles watching for the impact of Tim Kelly being introduced is key, however, they have already noted the fact that Kelly will be played up forward from time to time. Yeo is always in an elite matchup against the Demons on this slate as discussed in the game breakdown above.

Todd Goldstein (DS $13,149, MB $8,000) father time is undefeated and he will be coming for Goldstein at some stage. But for now, he continues to fight him off, and on this opening round of the season he draws the best matchup of the slate against St Kilda who gave up 91 points per game to number one rucks last year. This matchup is the best of a bad bunch, as discussed in the game breakdowns above everyone other matchup is against one of the stingiest ruck setups in the league.
