Western Bulldogs vs Adelaide at METRICON (WB -31.5, 129.5)
St Kilda vs Essendon at the GABBA (STK -15.5, 131.5)
West Coast vs Hawthorn at OPTUS Oval (WCE -26.5, 111.5)
WEATHER WATCH
Gold Coast
Brisbane
Perth
Conditions are all clear in both Queensland locations, it is Perth that there may be an issue. With thunderstorms and showers predicted through the morning and afternoon it may pass before the twilight game time, however it is likely still expected to be slippery and it is worth monitoring through the day.
Where to Attack
This is a juicy slate for defenders with the number 1 matchup in the league for the position playing in Hawthorn. The Hawks have given up over 5 points per game above the league average to defenders and a massive 75 points per game to the top three scoring players from this position. To make things even better we also have the Crows on the slate who have given up the second most points to backs this season.
The obvious play on this slate is going to be stacking up the Western Bulldogs midfield. Adelaide have given up the most points in the position the mids by over 2.6 points per player to the next highest team. This jumps to over 7 points more than second place when we isolate the top three scorers from the opposition at a ridiculous 98 points per player. Lock and load.
To cap things off we have a pick your poison in the ruck with the top three teams for points conceded to the oppositions number one ruckman in the league this year. Tim English and the Western Bulldogs have assumed a familiar spot at the top giving up 78 points per game, while St Kilda and Essendon are trailing just behind with no more than 1 point splitting the top 3.
VALUE PLAYS
Sam Draper (DS $7,590, DK $4,200)
Draper returns replacing Tom Bellchambers as the number 1 ruck for the Bombers again. So far in two game she has returned 55 and 52 fantasy points. At this price point it is still a respectable return and to me it is either spend low on Draper at the ruck position or spend up on Reilly O’Brien. None of the other options really take my fancy. On first through it may appear to be a tough matchup for a youngster in their third game going against Marshall and Ryder, but St Kilda have given up the second most fantasy points to the number one ruck this year.
Jack Bytel (DS $6,450, DK $3,500)
Bytel has seen a slight price increase to bring him off the minimum after returning 52 fantasy points in his first game. To me the biggest question is whether this output is replicable, and I certainly believe it is. Bytel was thrust right into the midfield in his first game attending 76% of St Kilda’s center bounces and even better, he draws a much more favourable matchup in this contest. In his first game he returned value despite being matched against Geelong who are the hardest team in the league to score fantasy points against. On this slate things get much easier as he faces Essendon who have conceded the third most points to midfielders this season.
Kobe Mutch (DS $5,000, DK $2,600)
Kobe will line up for his first game this season on this slate and being given a minimum price tag brings him right into discussion for daily fantasy. Mutch has played 3 games in 2018 where he averaged 60 (and 1 game where he went off injured on 0 in 2019). This history indicates that Mutch should be priced up higher than the minimum, and in addition he has a very strong history of fantasy scoring at the lower levels.
MID PRICED PLAYS
Shannon Hurn (DS $11,850, DK $5,600) / Brad Sheppard (DS $12,290, DK $5,900)
It is time to take advantage of the most automatic play in all the AFL, defenders against Hawthorn. With Liam Duggan out, the Eagles will have more opportunity for other defenders to pick up possessions as they set up attack from defense. The two I like are Shannon Hurn and Brad Sheppard. Both are the first two players the Eagles will look to when setting up play and stacking the two up together is an elite move given their high correlation together.
PREMIUM PLAYS
Reilly O’Brien (DS $14,720, DK $6,900)
This is the spend up choice for ruck on this slate. As noted above Tim English is now giving up the most fantasy points in the league to number one ruck man and big O’Brien has displayed plenty of upside over his journey (100+ points).
Marcus Bontempelli (DS $13,460, DK $6,600)
The Bont was in over 80% of the center bounces over the last two rounds of games. It the ever-present challenge that when it comes to playing Bontempelli, will he be used in the midfield or elsewhere. If he is playing a midfield role then the price tag is quite simply way too cheap. Things get even juicier when you consider the matchup, as we noted above the Crows give up the most points in the league to midfielders, and this mark goes up significantly when you are talking premium type players. I will not only be rostering Bontempelli, but also looking to stack him up with other Bulldogs mids (Macare, Dunkley, Smith).
