TPC River Highlands (6,841 yards, par 70) hosts the Travelers Championship after a massive US Open at Pebble Beach. Located in Connecticut, the course is a short well-bunkered course with some doglegs and small bentgrass greens. The fairways aren’t extremely narrow, but they are tree-lined. You will need to be accurate both off the tee and with your irons to compete here, but that doesn’t mean that we can only target accurate drivers of the ball. Most of the bombers will club down off the tee, which will naturally boost their driving accuracy for the week. This tends to be one of the lowest scoring events of the year, so you’ll have to rack up birdies to make the cut and to compete on the weekend.
 

The spotlight falls on Nos. 15-17, which play around a four-acre lake and create a finish considered among the most thrilling on the tour. River Highlands is the site of the PGA Tour’s only 58, when Jim Furyk reeled off 10 birdies and holed out for eagle at the par-4 No.3 back in 2016.

After the grind of the US Open you would expect a lesser known field this week, but it is a strong field with last week's runner up at the US Open in Brooks Koepka here at River Highlands, along with recent winner on the tour in Patrick Cantlay and British Open champion in Francesco Molinari. This week I am going to be looking at players who didn’t play the US Open or missed the cut as these guys will be much fresher for the event.

After missing the US Open whilst on holidays I was on the Koepka/Rahm train in Fiji and both had great tournaments. Let’s have a look at who I am targeting at the Travelers this week:

Justin Thomas ($9,800 DK $18,900 DS) - The wrist injury is gone, the rust is off. Thomas just needs to be in love with the putter again. Thomas does acknowledges this and should be dialled in after an early finish at the US Open. 4th in the field for Strokes Gained on approach and 1st in the field for Birdies or Better %. A woeful 93rd in the field for strokes gained putting. I am expecting a big bounce back and don’t let “bias” get in your way.

Jason Day ($10,000 DK $18,680 DS) - With Steve Willimas on the bag (ex Caddie for Tiger Woods and Adam Scott), Day did make the weekend at Pebble Beach and ended up T21 on a weekend that consistently is an issue. With a high price tag, I don’t expect many to be on Day this week after flying over to East Coast. Purely a low ownership play who does ranked 6th in Birdies or Better %. Hopefully one of those weeks where we might get a surprise out of nowhere win.

Tony Finau ($9,000 DK $17,190 DS) - Another high priced golfer who missed the cut at Pebble and has gone the past two events missing the cut. So it hasn’t been a great June so far. However 3 top 25 finishes at this event and a 2nd at the Charles Schwab Challenge a few weeks ago is something to hang your hat on. Sure he is spraying them everywhere but this is a new week and a fresh Finau ready to go.

Emiliano Grillo ($7,900 DK $15,780 DS) - Grillo is just too cheap to pass up this week on both sites were he grades out as a perfect value play. 3rd in the field for Strokes gained on approach, 7th in the field in Strokes gained off the tee. Great course set-up at River Highlands for Grillo plus he is great form with 7 made cuts in a row. Did have a great opening 68 before fading away for the rest of the tournament at Pebble Beach. Gonna be super chalky though so be warned.

Sebastian Munoz ($7,200 DK $12,560 DS) - Whilst Munoz did not qualify for the US Open (which means he is fresh), he is in great form with a T11th in the Canadian Open and a T10 at the Byron Nelson. Being a birdie track I am targeting Munoz as he is 20th in the field in Birdie or Better %. Other stats don’t quite pop out so, we may get Munoz at under 5% and provides good salary relief.

Troy Merritt ($7,100 DK $11,360 DS) - Merritt on the other hand has a lot of stats that are popping this week. 19th in the field for Strokes Gained Total, 14th in the filed for Strokes Gained on approach, 9th in the field for Birdies of Better %. Coming off a fast start at the Memorial before fading over the weekend, Merritt is dirt cheap for those who looking to go stars and scrubs this week. Merritt is currently ranked around the 100 mark for the FedEx cup, so for these golfers like Merritt they need to strive for elusive points so that they can make the playoffs.
