Valspar Golf Championship

After a fantastic Players Championship, the PGA tour stays in Florida where the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort hosts the Valspar Championship. The Par 71 7,340 yard layout is a challenging test of golf with extremely narrow tree-lined fairways and small Bermuda greens. The course contains 4 par fives and 5 challenging par threes with the signature 16th, 17th and 18th holes “The Snake Pit” providing a spectacular finish to each round.

With these very thin fairways, the course requires precision and approach shots to be the highest quality. This doesn’t mean that the big drivers cannot contend here, but it is big risk taking driver on this layout where we need to club down. With the Masters tournament now under a month away, the Tournament has lost a little star power after a stacked field at the Players, so we need to dig a little deeper in the talent pool. Big stat to look this week is Strokes gained on approach and Driving accuracy.

DraftKings have posted a $500,000 Drive the Green contest for a $5 buy-in, with a $1 entry also available for the $25K Short Game. PlayOn have posted a guaranteed $1,000 contest for an $11 USD buy-in and over at Moneyball a $500 contest for a $10 entry is available.

If you caught up with the DFR podcast and article for the Players Championship, I managed to tip Rory McIlory to win the championship which he duly saluted and we got off the Cabrera Bello train before it crashed! So let’s have a look which golfers I am targeting this week at the Valspar:

Dustin Johnson ($11,500 DK) With the withdrawal of Tommy Fleetwood and Cameron Smith, we can find enough value to get DJ in my lineups. Whilst this course is not suited to big bombing ways, I can see Johnson being accurate enough to contend for the title here. Hopefully driving ownership down is that Johnson hasn’t featured at the event since 2010.

Jon Rahm ($11,000 DK) The 54-hole leader at the Players had a horror Sunday at TPC Sawgrass which meant he crashed out of the top ten (T12). So we are on the bounce back narrative and his form outside of that round has been excellent. Currently 18th for Strokes Gained: Tee to green for the PGA tour.

Sergio Garcia ($10,100 DK) At this event in 2018 Garcia got hot that weekend and posted a T4. Forward to 2019 and Garcia’s game appears to be locked in right now. Currently on the PGA tour Garcia is ranked 8th for Tee-to Green, 16th for Birdie-or-Better and 1st for Approach the Green. For Garcia to contend for the title we need a hot putter which hopefully Garcia can oblige.

Nick Taylor ($7,300 DK) With not many big names at the event, we need to find some value to fit in the big players in these lineups. Now I didn’t know much about Taylor but his past record this season is a perfect fit in what I need. Made the cut in the last 4 events and was a T16 at the Players championship. Taylor can thank his approach game where he was T3 in greens at TPC Sawgrass.

Sungjae Im ($7,700 DK) Although he missed the cut last week at the Players, Im’s upside is that he can make T10’s and T5’s with his ability to be efficient in stroke play. We just need his putter to come along. Oh and he scored a hole in one as well on the 13th at the Players. I played Im last week which disappointed me as he only just missed the cut, but I'm going again as I know he can go big.

Jim Furyk ($9,200 DK) So the stars aligned for Furyk last week nearly pinching the Players title from Rory McIlory, in a performance that wound back the clock for the former captain of the Ryder Cup team. So he going to be a popular play this week and he is my fade. It is hard to ignore his past history including being a former winner and the three elements of his game (Irons, short game and putting) are on song at the moment. Let’s see if this was a once off performance.
