TPC Deere Run

TPC Deere Run in Illinois is the host course for the John Deere Classic, a par 71, 7268 yard layout which sets up as one of the easiest courses in the PGA Tour rotation every year. Due to the British Open being on next week, we have the weakest field for the year at TPC Deere Run this weekend. In fact, it's so weak that the highest ranked golfer in the world rankings is Charles Howell III, who is currently ranked 55th in the world. TPC Deere Run has historically been a course with a ton of birdies and eagles and the winning score has never been worse than 16 strokes under par. Even just to make to the weekend, golfers will need to be at minus 3 or better. Last week’s event, the 3M Open, turned out to be a brilliant finish with Tour rookies Matthew Wolff, Collin Morikawa, and Viktor Hovland showing why they are the next batch of top golfers. These three will be teeing it up at the John Deere Classic and are at the top of the salaries for this week's event. After those three guys the field gets pretty dirty, pretty quickly. Have a bit of fun and build some funky teams.

According to rotogrinders.com this week’s key statistics include:

(In Order of Importance)

1) Strokes Gained Approach

2) Birdie or Better %

3) Strokes Gained Putting

4) Strokes Gained Off the Tee

5) Proximity

This week’s contests include the $600,000 Drive the Green Contest on Draftkings and a $6,000 contest on Draftstars

Let’s see if I can find any gold from the rocks and pebbles in this week’s tips:

Brian Harman ($9,400 DK / $18,090 DS) - So this week I can forecast the “rookies” to be popular plays this week and the salaries on the sites allow to build these “stars and scrubs lineups” which is a perfectly fine play. For Harman and others though, I am targeting the putters of the field as this is an easy course to navigate and we need the putter to be on. Harman is 2nd in the field for Putting with 10 feet and 22nd in the field for Strokes Gained off the tee. Low ownership play that could pay off.

Wyndham Clark ($9,000 DK / $16,690 DS) - Clark had another indifferent Sunday at the 3M open. He was a bit wayward but still managed to score a 3 under 68. But alas he lost touch with the leaders and finished T5 at 17 under. This result has made his key stats pop this week for the John Deere. 2nd in Strokes Gained putting in the field and 1st in the field for Birdies or Better %. The key stat keeping him down - 119th in the field for Strokes Gained on approach.

J.T. Poston ($7,800 DK / $14,360 DS) - A T11 at the Rocket Mortgage although he was 2nd through 54 holes - just can’t seem to string 4 rounds together. No better way to continue his form here. His stats are very solid for the field but no real standouts here. Purely a form play in this weak field where a break-out can occur.

Shawn Stefani ($7,200 DK / $12,560 DS) - Stefani shot a 14 under T15 at the 3M Open and also shot an 11 under T35 for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Apart from those two tournaments, Stefani has not performed that well and the salary reflects on that history. Is 19th in the field for Strokes gained on approach. With this weak field I am expecting that form to continue.

Curtis Luck ($6,700 DK / $11,150 DS) - The former number US and Asia Pacific Amaetur champion from Western Australia is having a hard time this PGA tour season with several cuts (4 missed out of the last 5), but a strong result at the 3M open with a 7 under 58th finish. The reason why he's in my tips is that he's currently 7th in the field for Strokes Gained Putting and 30th in the field for proximity between 125-150 yards, which is the sweet spot at this course. Risky play but very cheap.

Matthew Wolff - ($10,500 DK / $18,830 DS) - Last week’s 3M open champion at his 3rd career pro start had the world buzzing about these new kids on the block. And that funky swing is quite something. Alas, he is my fade this week. Pretty hard to get away at that Draftstars price. The theme as you probably read from my articles is to jump off recent winners (Gary Woodland comes to mind) when they are 1st up from a win. But don’t be surprised if another top 10 result comes from Wolff. Just need to make a stand against his projected high ownership on Draftstars.
