Golf Daily Fantasy Tips: 2019 Greenbrier Classic
The Old White TPC course in West Virginia will be the host course for the opening event of the PGA Tour’s 2019-2020 season, The Salute to Military at the Greenbrier. A brand new season brings in new Tour graduates and new names to fantasy golf. This year, the PGA has made a couple of changes to the format of tournaments, most noteworthy is that after the conclusion of the 2nd round, only 65 golfers plus ties move onto the weekend. There is no more MDF (made cut but did not finish) rule going forward. So when we have big fields of 150+ golfers, making the weekend is going to be a little more difficult.
The Old White TPC Course isn’t a pushover, there are quite a few short par fours, and golfers aren’t afraid to hit the driver at this place with the wide fairways and limited hazards. Driving will be a big key this week, along with wedge/short iron proximity as this course can give up a few birdies. The course is a par 70 at 7,292 yards.
In the field this week are all 50 graduates from the Korn Ferry Tour including 21 rookies. Hardly any of the big names are here from the FedEx playoffs but there are a handful making good on the first tournament of the brand new season.
According to rotogrinders.com this week’s key statistics to look for include:
(In Order of Importance)
1) Strokes Gained Approach
2) Bogey Avoidance
3) Strokes Gained Off the Tee
4) Birdie or Better Percentage
5) Strokes Gained Putting
For the Fantasy Sites, DraftKings have posted a $300,000 Best Ball with $100,000 to 1st place. For Draftstars we have a $6,000 contest for a $15 entry and a 3-ball contest as well.
For this 'Swing Season' I am going to be posting suggested lineups and expand on these selections each week. As a disclaimer, I like to play around 3-5 lineups for DFS golf and these teams will be one of them. I’ll keep a tally on whether these made a return over the next couple of months. Hopefully make some pocket money if I want to head to the President’s Cup in Melbourne!

I have gone a ‘Stars and Scrubs’ approach this week as we do not have many top tier plays and plenty of cheap unknown golfers as well. Viktor Hovland is my main pick this week as he actually leads this field in Strokes Gained (SG) Off the Tee, SG on Approach and Greens in Regulation. Not the best putter yet, but each course he plays is brand new to Hovland. I am hoping a breakout win after finishing second in his most recent Korn Ferry Tour event. My two other premium plays are Sungjae Im and Scott Piercy. This is a long course but wide as well. These two are Birdie making machines and for Piercy, he tends to bully 'easier' courses on the Tour. Sungjae played a silly amount of tournaments last year, so it's no surprise to see him tee it up at the Greenbrier. Currently 1st in the field for Driving Distance, so lets hope his approach game is on song. I was able to fit in Scottie Scheffler and Joaquin Niemann into my Draftstars lineups, which I am pretty happy with. Niemann is ranked in the top 10 in this field in Strokes Gained Off the Tee, Strokes Gained Approach, and Birdie or better percentage. Apart from his missed cut at The Open, he has made the last 10 cuts on Tour. Scheffler was the number one golfer from last year’s Korn Ferry Tour with two wins and leader of numerous statistical categories including scoring average, Putting, Birdies or Better percentage and Par-5 scoring. Draftstars have priced him up compared to other Korn Ferry players but I was still able to squeeze him in.
I was stoked I can get Kristoffer Ventura into both teams, due to the fact that since June, he's won twice on the Korn Ferry tour in the space of four weeks and had a third place finish in the playoffs. Rounding out the cheap options are Sebastian Munoz, Peter Malanti and Shawn Stefani who all have PGA experience from last season and will be looking to build with great results in the new season.
Good luck in your lineups at the Greenbrier!
