Winx

The racing spotlight is once again on Randwick this Saturday for Day 2 of the Championships and the last race start of the great mare Winx. We should be racing on a relatively dry track which is a rarity for Sydney at this time of the year. Randwick is complemented my a nice off season meeting at Caulfield where there are some good options for tournament players.

SportChamps is the leading provider of fantasy horse racing tournaments and they offer a range of tournaments to suit all budgets. Their major tournaments are run on a Saturday with rebuy and no-rebuy options across the major metropolitan venues. Their offering for Day 1 of the Championships is a $15,000 guaranteed contest for only a $10 entry with 1 rebuy, as well as a $5,000 guaranteed for a $100 entry, also with 1 rebuy. For those not willing to spend a whole day in a big contest, they run consistent hour-long contests across a range of races. They also offer free to enter games which can be a great way to try the site out with no financial risk.

Moneyball and TopBetta also offer a smaller suite of contests but their rule variations and smaller fields mean the options are plenty for those wanting to play tournaments and we recommend you try out the different sites and options to find out which ones work for you.

Race 4 at Randwick is the Percy Sykes Stakes for the 2yo fillies. It brings together an interesting mix of horses, some who have had Golden Slipper campaigns against some fresh blood who have been more lightly raced. I'm happy to side with the fresh blood in the form of the James Cummings trained Flit. She comes off a dead-heat win at Flemington last start where I tend to think she hit the front too soon and got a bit lost which cost her winning the race outright. She has the services of James McDonald here and I expect her to be ridden quiet to produce a big finish. She has a prior meeting with race favourite Cheer Leader where she had no luck in running 3rd to that horse. I think she can turn the tables on Saturday. Flit is currently $8.00 with Neds.

Race 4 at Caulfield is for the stayers and it is hard to go past the Anthony Freedman trained Steel Prince who looks a most promising stayer. He has won both his starts this preparation and the rise to 2425m should only suit him more. He is not the type to put a gap in his opposition but he really knows where the line is and should find a lovely spot just off the speed in running. He was a last start winner over 2000m at Mornington but he really excelled last preparation when he got to this distance range and beyond. He looks a good banker for tournament players and is currently $2.05 with BetEasy.

Race 8 at Randwick is the Group 1 Sydney Cup over 3200m and it looks a most intriguing affair. The early favourite is Dubhe an international having its first run in Australia from the all conquering Charlie Appleby stable. Whilst he is quite short in the market, given the stables remarkable record when travelling horses I would keep him on your side if playing heavily into this race. Of the locals I'm happy to zero in on two horses, Yogi and Midterm. Yogi comes off a grinding 5th behind Avilius in the Tancred Stakes and is much better suited to this race. It has been his target all campaign and he has had one run at 3200m for a win. He will keep coming at the finish of the race and is currently $13 with Sportsbet. Midterm won the Manion Cup last start which is a key lead up race for this. He will be right on speed, perhaps even in front and is bred to stay all day. He is currently $8.50 with Pointsbet.

Back to Caulfield and Race 7 is for the 3yo sprinters and there is plenty of speed on paper here which looks to set it up nicely for a run on horse and I think that horse can be Halvorsen. He was a dominant winner fresh over this distance in easier grade last campaign at Bairnsdale and he should be able to settle in the second half of the field here and unleash his big finish down the middle of the track. He has form around horses such as Hawkshot and Tin Hat last preparation underlying his class. He is currently $6.00 with Sportsbet and looks a great play at that price.

Race 9 at Randwick is the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf for the fillies and mares over 1600m and as always this looks to be a very competitive affair. Many of these ran in the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill a month ago a race won dominantly by Dixie Blossoms. I see no reason why she cant win again and it seems as though the market has forgotten her a bit. She has since had run in the Doncaster last week and was as good a run as any horse who settled off the pace in that slowly run affair. There looks to be a much more genuine tempo here and she has a liking for the Randwick mile. She is currently $11 with Sportsbet. The other horse that looks primed to peak is Prompt Response who is a recent addition to the Chris Waller stable. She has only had two runs back and her last start was a well beaten 4th to Winx in the George Ryder on a heavy track. That race has turned out to be a great form race with 2nd and 3rd running the first two placings in the Doncaster last week and 7th place Ringerdingding winning the Carbine Club Stakes last week. Getting back on to a drier track will also be a big plus for this mare and she is currently $11 with BetEasy.
