DraftKings Are Coming To Australia!
It’s official! DraftKings are coming to Australia!
The announcement was made today from DraftKings headquarters in Boston – DraftKings, the world's largest daily fantasy sports site, have their Australian licence approved and will begin offering DFS contests to Australian customers in Q2.
“Within the last few years, Australia’s burgeoning fantasy sports market has dramatically evolved, adding a variety of daily fantasy sports platforms, feeding the appetite of the many passionate sports fans who love getting closer to the teams, athletes and sports they love,” said DraftKings CEO Jason Robbins.
“Australia is an important market for DraftKings, as it combines devoted sports fans with sophisticated, tech-savvy consumers – exactly the kind of people who love competing on DraftKings.”
DraftKings were granted a licence by the Northern Territory Racing Commission under which it is permitted to offer daily fantasy sports in Australia (except South Australia). It is the first time that DraftKings has operated outside of the US or Europe and Australia will mark the eighth country where DraftKings is available to consumers.
Players in Australia will have access to hundreds of DFS contests with millions of dollars in prize money awarded every single week. At this stage, DraftKings are yet to confirm if Australian sports will be included with the launch, but no doubt AFL, NRL and A-League DFS fans will have their fingers crossed!
It’s been an interesting week in the DFS landscape in Australia, with the recent announcement of PlayUp Interactive acquiring both Draftstars and TopBetta. With Draftstars announcing a $100,000 contest for ANZAC Day, PlayON offering a $100,000 AFL Super Contest later in the year, and now the potential of what DraftKings might provide, suddenly DFS in Australia is bursting at the seams!
