Strikers v Heat

The first of Sunday’s BBL08 double header sees the Adelaide Strikers host the Brisbane Heat at the Adelaide Oval. The Strikers scored a stunning win over the Hurricanes in Launceston on Thursday night to move to 5-7 and while a place in the finals still look unlikely, they remain in with a sniff. On the other hand, the Heat would need a miracle to make the finals but scored a 6 wicket win over the Scorchers on Friday night.

These two teams met in the first game of the season where it was the Strikers winning by 5 wickets, led by 70 at the top of the order by Alex Carey.

The Strikers welcome back Peter Siddle, who has been released from national duties to rejoin the team, and he replaces out-of-form paceman Billy Stanlake. The Heat have brought back Mark Steketee and Mitch Swepson to replace Brendan Doggett and star spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who has returned to Afghanistan and will miss the two remaining games.

The Adelaide Oval is one of the higher scoring grounds for teams batting first but the overall statistics indicate the scoring to be middle of the road. The pitch appears to be playing well so there is no obvious edge to either the fast bowlers or the spinners, while batsmen are getting every opportunity to score runs here if good enough – something that can’t be said for a few of the other grounds in the competition. In terms of fantasy points, the ground is one of the lower scoring ones in the competition with an even balance between batting and bowling, as displayed on the Points Against tool in our BBL Resources section.

BATSMEN

Chris Lynn ($19,400) showed a pleasing return to form at the Gabba against the Scorchers on Friday night, finishing unbeaten on 56 off 39 balls. He enjoys batting on pitches like these and his price, while expensive, is still reasonable given he has four scores of 99 or above in his past ten matches. The much vaunted Strikers bowling attack hasn’t been at the same level this year so a match-winning score from Lynn is in play.

Colin Ingram ($10,900) can be forgiven for only scoring 14 fantasy points against the Hurricanes as the job was done ahead of him at the top of the order. A run of low scores has resulted in his salary plummeting but it was only three games ago that he concluded a purple patch of form which provided three consecutive scores of 64 and above. Batting at 4 against a very plain Heat bowling attack is a little concern after the form the openers showed last game, but he doesn’t need many overs at the crease to return value and his upside is undeniable.

I highlighted Matt Renshaw ($10,500) last time against the Scorchers and he provided a very valuable 61 fantasy points at a cheap price. He was given four overs with the ball in what is an increasing role for him and while he dropped to no. 5 in the batting order he was still able to contribute at the end of the innings. While his salary has increased it is still on the low side for a player who gets involved in the game as much as he does.

BOWLERS

It has now been four games in a row where Rashid Khan ($22,300) has scored 40 fantasy points or less, so he has been extremely costly for those rostering him at the high salary. Does this poor run of form make him an easy fade, or does it provide an opportunity to maybe strike at lower ownership? I lean to the latter, especially with a number of value options available to fit in his price. Long live the King.

Peter Siddle ($14,000) didn’t make an impact last time he returned from the Australian team but his previous form this season was extremely solid. His BBL success has been quite surprising given he is more known for his performances in the longer forms of the game but you can’t deny the numbers he has put together over the past two seasons. He is capable of taking three wickets with an economy bonus so at this price he is very playable.

Interestingly Josh Lalor ($13,100) dropped in price despite taking a hat-trick last game which scored him 69 fantasy points. He has been rather inconsistent but has taken a ton of wickets since returning to the side and bowls at the death where he can pick them up quickly. Not a bowler to anchor your lineups around but his upside at this price definitely means you should have some exposure to him.
