BBL12 Fantasy Tips: Saturday Double Header Strikers/Heat and Renegades/Stars
Saturday is set to be a huge day of BBL12 cricket, with two star studded teams taking to Adelaide Oval before Marvel Stadium hosts a Melbourne derby under lights.
The Strikers and Renegades will be hoping to solidify their spots in the top five, while for the Heat and Stars it’s about getting off the bottom of the table.
Draftstars have put up a heap of contests to suit every budget, including Qualifiers for the new Big Bash Star competition.
Here Josh Nevett will give his DFS tips for each encounter.
Adelaide Strikers vs Brisbane Heat
Strikers Squad: Wes Agar, Cameron Boyce, Alex Carey (wk) Harry Conway, Colin de Grandhomme (NZ), Travis Head (c) Adam Hose (ENG), Henry Hunt, Thomas Kelly, Chris Lynn, Ben Manenti, Matt Short, Peter Siddle, Henry Thornton
Heat Squad: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Renshaw, Jimmy Peirson (c), Xavier Bartlett, James Bazley, Josh Brown (LRP), Max Bryant, Spencer Johnson, Matt Kuhnemann, Michael Neser, Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson, Sam Hain (ENG)
Both these teams are coming off a loss, but the Strikers are far better placed to get back on the winners list here.
Returning to the home turf that has brought plentiful returns in this campaign, Adelaide will be full of confidence after acquiring the services of Alex Carey and Travis Head.
The international duo will join Matt Short and Chris Lynn in a formidable top order that will be tough to contain for the struggling Heat bowling attack.
Speaking of, Brisbane could only muster two wickets while defending 155 against the Scorchers the other night.
While the Heat have welcomed some batting firepower of their own – Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Matt Renshaw – the visitors simply don’t have the weapons with the ball to consistently restrict the opposition.
For that reason, Adelaide will enter this clash as heavy favourites.
Strikers vs Heat Fantasy Plays
Love It – Sam Hain ($8,800)
English batsman Hain has yet to make his BBL debut, but if he gets a chance tomorrow night then he is exceptional value. Hain has scored over 2800 T20 runs at a strike rate of over 130 and will likely slot into the Heat middle order. At basement price, it’s hard to look past him.
Don’t Love It – Marnus Labuschagne ($17,600)
Labuschagne failed to fire on his BBL return, scoring just 10 DFS points. While the test star is a class act in red ball cricket, I don’t think his talents warrant a near $18k price tag here, especially considering he primarily plays as a batsman.
Who Knows – Travis Head (14,500)
Head seems to be growing by the season and has established himself as a top-class three-format player. The flashy left-hander will settle back into the number four position for the Strikers, a spot he has made his own in the past, and most will expect him to hit his straps immediately. However, it’s been a long summer, so it might take a couple of games before we see Head’s best.
Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars
Renegades Squad: Aaron Finch, Martin Guptill (NZ), Sam Harper, Mackenzie Harvey, Fawad Ahmed, Shaun Marsh, David Moody, Kane Richardson, Corey Rocchiccioli, Tom Rogers, Will Sutherland, Matt Critchley, Jon Wells, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Ruwantha Kellapotha, Jack Prestwidge
Stars Squad: Adam Zampa, Hilton Cartwright, Joe Clarke (ENG), Brody Couch, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Liam Hatcher, Clint Hinchliffe , Campbell Kellaway, Nick Larkin, Tom O'Connell, Tom O'Donnell, Tom Rogers, James Seymour, Beau Webster, Luke Wood (ENG)
Another Melbourne derby has rolled around and this time there is a lot on the line.
Both these teams are in precarious positions when it comes to finals qualification, so a win here will go a long way to securing a spot in the top five.
The Renegades have been up and down and are still looking for a reliable spin option now that Hosein and Ur Rahman have exited. Veteran Fawad Ahmed comes into the squad for this game, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in red on Saturday night.
On the other hand, the Stars are coming off their first win in four games, and it was a big one. Liam Hatcher, Joe Clarke and Tom Rogers led the lowly team in green to a 9-wicket win over the in-form Strikers, a huge victory given recent results.
As a result, the Stars are in still in the hunt for a finals berth, but every game is a challenge at the moment in the absence of Maxwell and Stoinis.
Renegades vs Stars Fantasy Plays
Love It – Kane Richardson ($18,900)
Richardson has been a Marvel Stadium specialist over the years, and I expect him to turn up for this massive game. The Renegades spearhead has scored 106 and 88 in his last two home games and the Stars have a notoriously fragile batting line-up, so expect Kane to be among the wickets on Saturday night.
Don’t Love It – Martin Guptill ($16,800)
Guptill has been nowhere near his best in his stint down under so far. The Kiwi hitter has averaged just 25 DFS points with a high score of 56, returns that simply don’t cut it at this price point. Sure, Guptill has a lot of history behind him, but I’m not willing to take the gamble.
Who Knows – Tom Rogers ($14,400)
Do you remember the last Melbourne derby? In case you live under a rock, Rogers took 5-24 in a match-winning spell for the Renegades, tearing apart the Stars top order. The big quick will surely be pumped to repeat the dose on Saturday, but it couldn’t possibly happen again, could it?
