New Year’s Eve brings us another BBL12 double header, with games taking place in Albury and Adelaide.

The Hobart Hurricanes will be out to justify their tag as preseason title favourites, while the Strikers can extend their lead at the top of the standings with a win over the Stars.

Draftstars have put up a heap of contests to suit every budget, including Qualifiers for the new Big Bash Star competition.

Here Josh Nevett will give his DFS tips for each encounter.

Sydney Thunder vs Hobart Hurricanes

The Thunder and Hurricanes are both in a precarious position heading into the new year, sitting fifth and sixth, respectively.

Sydney have been up and down – they started with a win before losing three in a row (including the infamous defeat to Adelaide), before consolidating with two recent victories.

As such, it’s hard to know if the Thunder are the real deal.

There is enough talent in the squad – Daniel Sams has 11 wickets and Hales is among the top run scorers – but consistency will be key if the green machine is a chance to win it all.

Hobart have been similarly inconsistent, sitting 2-2 after four matches.

The Hurricanes have one of the deepest squads in the competition, so it’s a little surprising that they have failed to string wins together so far.

However, I’m confident the team from Tasmania can launch a run in the back end of the campaign, led by the likes of Wade, David, McDermott and Meredith.

Thunder vs Hurricanes Fantasy Plays

Love It – James Neesham ($13,000)

The big Kiwi took over Ben McDermott’s role at the top of the order last game and produced his best return of the season (64 points). McDermott won’t return for this match so I expect Neesham to reprise his role, and if he’s trusted with the ball there is value to be had.

Don’t Love It – Nathan Ellis ($14,100)

Ellis has struggled for form so far in BBL12, with just one wicket to his name after four matches. Despite recently representing Australia, the quick looks down on confidence and his price has yet to come down, so it’s a tough sell in DFS.

Who Knows – Rilee Rossouw ($14,800)

Rossouw has shown glimpses of his big hitting prowess in BBL12, without smashing a huge score. The South African import has cracked 40 DFS points twice, but if he can find his form against the Hurricanes then three figures is a possibility.

Adelaide Strikers vs Melbourne Stars

The Strikers are sitting pretty at the top of the table, after a superb start to BBL12.

Adelaide are firing on all cylinders – Matt Short has 177 runs with the bat, while Henry Thornton tops the wicket-taker rankings with 14.

There is still room for improvement on the batting front, but the Strikers will enter this game on home turf as heavy favourites.

For the Stars, it’s a matter of steadying the ship after three losses on the trot.

Melbourne have been terribly underwhelming with the bat and it’s no surprise, Glenn Maxwell has been out injured and his partner in crime Marcus Stoinis has not yet made an impact.

Joe Clarke has been the only shining light – he currently possesses the ‘Golden Cap’ with 190 runs to his name.

He will need some support if the Stars are to challenge Adelaide on NYE.

Strikers vs Stars Fantasy Plays

Love It – Matthew Short ($22,400)

You get what you pay for with Matt Short. The Adelaide all-rounder has hit the DFS ton three times already and has not gone below 60 in five matches. You simply can’t risk missing out on those numbers, even if you have to cough up over $22k.

Don’t Love It – Harry Nielsen ($8,800)

It’s always tempting to roster players at minimum price, especially if you want to accommodate the likes of Short. However, I can’t see a huge ceiling for Nielsen. The Strikers keeper is batting at 7 and has averaged just 26 points – if Adelaide win big I’m doubtful he gets the opportunity to top that.

Who Knows – Adam Zampa (15,700)

Australia’s best white ball spinner has been up and down this campaign. Next to three scores above 60 Zampa has a 0 and a -11, so he has hardly been bankable value. What will we get from the leg spinner on Saturday night?
